THE IPC’s Desert Island Films

Eric from Isaacs Picture Conclusions (aka The IPC) has kindly submitted his Desert Island Films. Read on for his choices and reasons, and be sure to check out his site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

 Eric’s Desert Island Films

1) The Professional (Leon) – Choosing only eight films to be stuck with on a desert island was much harder than I thought it would be, but I know that if I had to choose only ONE it would be this. This is easily my favorite movie ever and I have never had any problems with this in all of the times i’ve seen it. Jean Reno is simply amazing as the sad and lonely – oh and BAD-ASS – Leon, a hit man just trying to get by. Apparently he had some hard times back in Italy because of some girl so now he’s over in NYC offing some bad guys and drinking his milk, living alone with his best friend, a plant. Soon, a group of bad cops murder his neighbor’s family and he reluctantly takes in the daughter (a truly Lolita-ish Natalie Portman) and they head out to avenge their deaths. Because – yep – “no women, no kids” is his credo. I’ve loved this movie, easily 100 times, and would definitely be OK if I was stuck with this out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I would never consider myself an artist but I tried to do my own version of a movie poster for this once and, for what it’s worth it’s the one on the left.

2) The Cabin in the Woods – I LOVED this movie. I know people are divided on it, but I loved it. This was right up my alley… tongue in cheek fun, sarcasm, irony, blood and guts, hilarity and just plain awesomeness. It made my entire movie when Hemsworth jumped that ravine. I know the ending got a little obnoxious but who cares, everything that came before that was five star wicked! This was made for someone like me by people like me. I burn myself in effigy to Cabin in the Woods.

3) Rubber – I don’t think this has been seen by a ton of people (or at least people I talk to) but this is only one of my favorite movies. This is a brilliant movie about movies not making sense – ala – a tire, reanimated from “the dead”, rolling around and blowing the heads off of people with “his” psycho-kenetic abilities. This is gory, hilarious, well shot and has one of the best ten minute endings I have seen in forever. Love it!

4) Amber Lake – I know I’ve gone on and on about this movie over at my site, but this is really that good. I wish it was available in more places so more people could get their hands on it, because, mainly it needs to be seen, but also, because I wish I could talk to someone about it. Three good looking daughters all named Amber head to “Amber Lake” to meet with their estranged father. Before too long he’s dead and the story is told in three different perspectives from the three ladies – and it’s wicked awesome. If anyone reads these words and has an opportunity to watch this – I think you should.

5) Drive – OK OK – here’s the truth – I had NO desire to see this because I didn’t care for Gosling and the TV was really pushing me to watch it. I hate it when people or ads or whatever try too hard to compel me to see or do something when I need to make my own decision. That was a mistake on my part because this movie was (BEEEEEEP)ing GREAT!!! I am now a Gosling fan and have some hope left for Albert Brooks and whatever you think about this movie, having not seen it – this is FANTASTIC. F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C.

6) Big Trouble in Little China – this one actually caused a big debate in my head because I’ve seen this SOOOO many times, would I want the same rerun on over and over, deserted and all by myself on an island with just Papayas to keep me company? In the end, the answer to that is yes because this movie is so entertaining that I doubt I could ever get tired of Jack Burton and his buddies. As long as I don’t end up in The Hell of the Upside Down Sinners and stranded on a remote piece of land with a DVD player and some fruit, I should be OK.

7) KICK-ASS! The first time I came across this I watched it on a Friday night. Then again on Saturday. And then on Sunday. Kick Ass kicks ass!!! I love this movie and was introduced to Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Nic Cage finally did something good again and this was bloody and gory and balls-out awesome! This was funny too and Mark Strong was wicked and McLovin had a good role and everything was just Kick Ass in this. I can’t even wait for the sequel and I am tapping my fingers on my desk in pained patience for it. If you haven’t seen this – do.

8) After Dark, My Sweet – this one was a toss up with Frozen. I think, if I took Frozen with me I might get tired of it a little after a while but it’s really, really good. AD/MS is excellent and I figure I could watch it over and over and over again for quite some time and not get tired of it. A film noir with Jason Patric and Rachel Ward – this seethes cold and dark greatness. When I was much younger, I remember being in southern California with my uncle: we had gone out to this smallish mountain to go climbing and I remember staring at it (at the age when a person tries to determine their own destiny) and thinking – “that’s the mountain I need to overcome to find myself.” AD/MS has a very similar scene so maybe that’s why it resonated with me so much. Either way, I love it!

The Book – Mailman – I have tried to write about this a dozen times over on the book review site but I really can’t get into it without re-reading and I have so little time to do reading that I can’t get to it. This is probably the perfect spot to plug it. This book is HILARIOUS and SAD and UNBELIEVABLY good but it does run about 600 pages, depending on the version you have in your hands, so you need to have time to invest. A normal yet sociopathic mailman is reading your letters, and still delivering them, and just trying to make it, and trying to win the local radio station give-away, and trying to avoid the sister he may or may not have been in love with his whole life, or trying to not be punished for biting the eye out of his college professor, or (BEEPING) it at the local public library. I know that sounds a little risqué but this is an EXCELLENT book, long, but worth it. Mailman is worth your time. Go get it now on your reader. Now, dammit, now.

Luxery Item – If I couldn’t have my iPad (even if I wouldn’t use it for rescue) (my god I love my iPad) I would probably take a queue from you, Tyson, and take my wedding ring. Most of our pix are digital so I would need the “pad” but if I couldn’t have that it would be The One Ring. I haven’t had an easy time in my life and there is nothing better that I have ever experienced than our wedding day. If I was stuck on an island out in the middle of nowhere with just some movies and a book, at least I could swirl the ring around my finger and remember how good it was at one point for so many years… before I was marooned on an island with just some fruit and my best friend was some sand.
