Andy’s Desert Island Films

Andy from Andy Watches Movies has kindly submitted his Desert Island Films. Read on for his choices and reasons, and be sure to check out his site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Andy’s Desert Island Films

 1) Goodfellas
Goodfellas holds the title of my favorite movie ever, so it’s a no-brainer that it would be my first choice. I’ve seen the film easily two dozen times and I never grow tired of it. In fact, the last time I watched it I noticed something I had never paid attention to before. Martin Scorsese is my personal hero.

 2) The Big Lebowski
Another film that I have seen many times but still notice little details each time. Understanding the plot took several viewings on its own, but the hilarity of The Big Lebowski is really in the details. Some of my favorite moments of the film might not even get noticed on your first viewing.

 3) Drive
This is the newest film that will appear on my list but I’ve already watched it five times since it came out and I don’t know the last time I fell so hard in love with a movie. Drive just connects with me, I don’t know if it’s Ryan Gosling’s strong, silent protagonist, the soundtrack, the color palate, the violence, the driving, or Albert Brooks as a villain…But I love it.

 4) King Kong (1933)
For a film going on 80 years old, I’m still in awe of King Kong’s special effects and I watch it on a fairly frequent basis. King Kong was one of the first movie monsters I had ever seen and none of the remakes of the film have the same feeling to them (even though I still enjoy them).

 5) Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
I would seriously have to disown myself if I left Star Wars off my list. Everything about Empire is damn near perfect and as far as great movie sequels go, I think the only other film that gets as much recognition is Godfather Part II. Empire also has the bounty hunters on the super star destroyer, how cool was that scene? If only I could bring some of my old Star Wars figures to play with too…

 6) The Jerk
Since I’m on a deserted island, I could probably use a laugh and The Jerk is possibly my favorite comedy. Why? Because I really hate those cans.

 7) The Double Life of Veronique
I haven’t chosen a foreign film yet and since I thought it would be cheating to pick Krzysztof Kieslowski’s Decalogue or Three Colors trilogy so The Double Life of Veronique gets my spot and I’m perfectly OK with that. Not only is this film haunting and beautiful, but I’ve had totally different interpretations of it each time I watch it. Irene Jacob is easy on the eyes, too.

 8) Seven Samurai
Last but certainly not least is the Kurosawa masterpiece, Seven Samurai. Aside from the epic length of this amazing film, the Criterion set is so loaded with extra features that I could probably spend an entire day just on Seven Samurai.
Honorable mentions: C.H.U.D., Fargo, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Phantom Carriage, and Jaws (but who would really want to watch that on a desert island?!)

Book – My book of choice would normally be Lord of the Flies, I’ve read it multiple times and I absolutely adore it…But for the same reason I wouldn’t want to watch Jaws, I don’t think I’d want to read Lord of the Flies on a desert island. Instead, I think I would opt for Flicker by Theodore Roszak which is a very strange novel about hidden messages being put into the flickering blacks and whites of films. I’ve only read it once, but it’s fairly lengthy and captivating.

Inanimate luxury item is a bit tricky. I would have to take a bit of a guess and assume the island had a terrain that I could use my bicycle and I would take that. Even though it’s nothing too fancy, I absolutely love cycling. Oh, that’s also assuming I couldn’t pack a raft or satellite phone or something else to get me off the island, of course.
