Cinema Schminema – Desert Island Films

Mistylayne from Cinema Schminema has kindly submitted her Desert Island Films. Read on for her choices and reasons, and be sure to check out her site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Mistylayne’s Desert Island Films:

1.  A Tale of Two Sisters – As I’m sure you’ve all heard me mention by now, this is one of my all time favorite movies.  It’s a perfect mix of horror, psychological thriller and family drama.  Sure, I’ve seen it 800 times but every time I watch, I discover something new plus being stuck on an island would finally give me the time to watch my super deluxe special edition with all the commentaries and interviews!

2.  Black Swan – This movie struck a chord with me on so very many levels.  It’s another film that’s chock full of layers and hidden meaning.  As soon as I walked out of the theater after seeing it for the first time, I was ready to turn around and watch it again immediately.

3.  A Nightmare on Elm Street – I have a deep love of Freddy.  More importantly, I am an insomniac (as I type it’s 2 in the morning and I don’t anticipate a visit from sleep for quite awhile).  I rarely get to bed before 3 or 4.  And when my insomnia is at it’s worst, I pop in Nightmare.  Weird as it is, for some reason, this movie lulls me to sleep – I’m out like a light before the always epic Tina murder.

4.  Pan’s Labyrinth – Another movie I hold dear.  I have major depressive disorder and the first time I saw this film, I was deep in the depths of a severe episode.  Pan’s is so sad and so beautiful and so full of meaning and wonder, it’s a reminder of just how far imagination can take you (and I’m gonna need a whole heck of a lot of imagination to entertain myself on this island!).

5.  Rent – Not the movie version with Rosario Dawson but the taped version of the live show.  I know a lot of people aren’t fans of Rent but it resonates with me (are you sensing a pattern in my film choices here? ;)).  Every time I watch Rent it cheers me up to no end and fills me with a sense of hope (also important to surviving the desert island).

6.  The Simpsons Movie – I love cartoons and I love the Simpsons (even if they’re not always as great as they once were).  I figure bringing all the seasons of this is out of the question so I’ll just bring the movie instead and bask in the always amusing shenanigans of the Simpson clan.

7.  Day After Tomorrow – I don’t know what it is about this movie but it’s one of those I can watch over and over and over again (and boy, have I!).  Maybe it’s just the special effects or maybe it’s my fondness for coming up with a plan for any and all future worse case scenarios (my zombie apocalypse plan is, I believe, pretty solid).  Regardless, watching this will make me feel less sorry for myself (and I will feel sorry for myself because I am not fond of sand or water or beaches or the sun) because the folks in this movie have it way worse.

8.  The LXD – Okay, this isn’t a movie, it’s a webseries but since I have Seasons 1 & 2 on one disc, I’m gonna count it.  If you’ve never heard of it, the LXD is about dancers.  But not just any dancers, oh no, but the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers!  See these guys are in a battle to keep the balance of evil and good in the world and dancing is their superpower.  I know how cheesy it sounds but when you see someone run up a wall and vault off the ceiling or watch the episode where demons attack a group of seamen (and seawomen), demons who can contort their bodies in ways I’ve never even imagined, it’s hard to not be impressed.  The story’s not bad and the dialogue is only passable but the LXD has everything!

Book:

This is uber hard because I’m a voracious reader.  It’s not uncommon for me to go through 3 or more books a week.  But I think I would bring The Entire Grimm Brothers Collection.  I almost went with my Complete Works of Shakespeare (the one I carry around in my car at all times, in case I ever break down and get stuck on the side of the road) but I don’t enjoy every single one of Shakespeare’s works while I do pretty much love every one of the Grimm brothers.  The collection is vast so it’d take me eons to read it and there’s a little something of everything in it so I won’t get bored.

Grimms

Luxury Item:

A notebook. I suppose I’d have to fashion a pencil or other writing utensil out of something on the island, since I imagine a pen would be a whole other luxury item but a notebook would be my one extra. I don’t just write movie reviews, I write about everything. At the moment, I have approximately 20 notebooks going (each holds a different form of writing) and I always have a notebook on my person. I don’t go a day without writing something and this way I could while away the hours writing my novellas and poetry and whatnot and then spend even MORE hours editing my work so by the time I get off this island (god, I hope I get off this island!), I should have a few bestsellers under my belt (cause who’s NOT going to buy a book from someone who was stuck on an island for ages?).

*************************************************************************************************

  1. Thank you for contributing to my project Misty!! Much appreciated, and great choices! I haven’t seen ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, sounds great so will definitely be checking that out. I very nearly sneaked Drive in on your list to try and make you look cooler, but I decided that was cheating 😉

I’ll support Misty on this one. I did not like Drive. At all. My reasons:
Music was terrible and for me didn’t fit the film at all
No characters made me give a damn about their motivations actions
For a movie about a driver, not a lot of good driving
        kind of boring
needless graphic violence to counterpoint the boredom (i don’t mind violence or graphic violence in film, but here it felt out of place)

        Things I liked:
        Bryan Cranston
        Albert Brooks
The scene on the beach towards the end

        Hate me if you must!

        • I stopped reading at ‘the music was terrible’ 🙂 The music was perfect man!! Ahhhh, I know its all about opinions, but no way is this film boring. Might need to make a thread devoted to Drive – for and against and get a jury on it!

I definitely got some opinions for against. I think Refn can be a good director, but for me at least he misses something. I have the same problems with Bronson. I think the acting is great but for me it is missing something

        • To each their own! Personally I loved Bronson & Pusher Trilogy, but Drive is one of the best films Ive ever seen 🙂
