Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Full Metal Jacket

I had to have a Kubrick film in here and it was a toss up between this and The Shining, but this just about got the vote. I love the way it’s split into two halves, both incredibly different from each other. There are so many memorable scenes and it’s probably one of the best examples of Kubrick’s dark sense of humour.

On the Waterfront

I couldn’t not include this – my blog is named after the lead character after all. This is Brando at his very, very best and with great performances from others such as Eva Marie Saint and Rod Steiger, it’s just even better. It’s a great story in its own right but when you take into consideration the political and historical subtexts, it’s even better. And then, of course, there’s that scene. Superb.

Wayne’s World

Not exactly the connoisseur’s choice, but absolutely one of my favourite comedy films. It’s so immensely quotable and I honestly don’t think there’s an unfunny moment in it. Mike Myers has done plenty since this but I still think this is the best thing he’s done by a mile. Party on!

Drive

One of my favourite films of the last few years. It’s so simple but yet so brilliantly done. Gosling is just so damn cool, especially as he somehow makes me want to own a satin jacket with a scorpion on the back. Also a great little role by Christina Hendricks and an absolute killer OST.

PJ20

This so counts. Pearl Jam are my absolute favouritist band in the whole entire world, so if I’m going to be stuck on a desert island, I’m going to need some of their music. This Cameron Crowe documentary goes over the band’s 20 year history with loads of interviews and concert clips and is a must see if you have any interest in the band or their music.

Inglorious Basterds

For me, this film has pretty much everything and is another of my favourites from the past few years. It has plenty of violence, humour and a superbly creepy performance by Christoph Waltz.

The Matrix

The sequels may have been utter garbage, but The Matrix is still a belter of a film. The action and effects still hold up, the lobby shoot out is brilliant, and if I’m on a desert island, I can pretend to be Neo and try to do all the kung fu stuff and no-one will see.

The Avengers

I’m a bit of a sucker for superhero films and this jumped pretty much to the top of my favourites when it came out. Joss Whedon did a phenomenal job in putting all of those characters together and giving them an equal time at the crease. I very nearly opted for The Dark Knight here but I’d want to see that as part of the trilogy whereas this (at the moment) stands on its own.

Book – Catch 22

When I first started to read Catch 22 for the first time, I couldn’t get my head around it. The narrative jumped all over the place and it was difficult to follow who was who and what was going on. However, by the time I finished it, it had become one of my favourite books. It’s witty, clever, satirical and is the kind of book you find new stuff in every time you read it, making it ideal to have on a desert island.

Inanimate object – guitar

I can play guitar a little bit but if I’m stranded on an island I reckon I’d have the time to become pretty good. I could also use it as a makeshift paddle should I need to.
