Whipped Cream – Desert Island Films

BreAna from Whipped Cream has kindly submitted her Desert Island Films. Read on for her choices and reasons, and be sure to check out her site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Whipped Cream – Desert Island Films

1. Last of the Mohicans –

This movie is epic and I LOVE Daniel Day Lewis, he is a brilliant actor and this film makes me cry like a b*!@# every time I watch it. The music is divine; I could lay by the TV and just listen to the credits for as long as they ran. Although I’m not really a sap, sometimes it is nice to be reminded that true love exists.

2. Bridesmaids –

If I’m on a desert island I definitely need to laugh, heartily, and continuously until I eventually go mad. No really, humor is definitely a must have when flying solo and this film kills me. I think it’s the funniest modern comedy I’ve ever seen, but then again I’m a woman and some of the humor hits close to home in terms of personal experience (bridesmaid duties…ugh). It also reminds me of the complexity and solidarity that is friendship with other women. No two friendships are the same.

3. Trois Couleurs: Rouge –

My all time favorite movie! It is French, it is fabulous, it inspired me to go to film school. I figure it will also help me learn a new language since I’ll have so much time on this desert island, might as well learn something. It is also includes a intricate web of alternate planes, interconnected lives, and subtle symbolism which means every time I watch it I find new meaning. Nothing is better than that when you have all the time in the world to contemplate life.

4. Despicable Me –

Another favorite in the kids movie category, the quotables in this film are plenty and the silliness (along with Bridesmaids) will be welcome on my sad little island. I think this movie about an evil villain turned softy father of three orphan girls is adorable and full of great moments. I’m hoping to dress as Vector for Halloween this year, that is how much I love this movie. “Oh yeah! Unpredictable!”

5. The Goonies –

This movie is in my blood, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest in the 80’s and this was definitely a movie watched over and over again – it inspired many treasure hunts out in the woods near my house. “Goonies never say die!” Another good motivating quote to utilize while trapped on a desert island. It would be incredibly nostalgic for me to watch and remember being young and innocent running free with my friends. Hell, sometimes I need that even when I’m sitting at home on the couch.

6. Vertigo –

Do I really need to say why? It’s Alfred Hitchcock, it’s brilliant – Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak in San Francisco intertwined in a twisted love affair of mistaken identity. So many things I love about it yet so little time to finish this email.

7. Alien –

A sci-fi legend with a kickass female lead, I had to include at least one movie about a fearless woman surviving at all costs and never giving up to the beast. I figure I’d need the motivation every so often when dealing with maybe a wild board or other monster type animals that may inhabit this desert island.

8. The Shining –

Stanley Kubrick at his best, plus this film is scary but set in a frozen Colorado hotel so I figure on a desert island I won’t get too spooked as there will be few parallels between settings. So much good stuff in this film that just freaks me out every time I watch it. Ghosts, murder, insanity, desolate landscape – doesn’t get much better than that for a horror film.

Book –

The Swiss Family Robinson book because it has all sorts of rad descriptions of tree houses I could construct while trapped on this island. Plus, it makes the best of a situation much like my own while being deserted on an island. Basically, all my choices above are about how I can watch movies that will motivate me to stay alive and well, keep hope, and gain courage in a seemingly hopeless situation.

Luxury Item – I guess my luxury item, not being of utilitarian use, would be a giant bag of popcorn. I need something to eat while I’m watching my movies plus popcorn is my favorite food (I know, so cliché since I’m a film school grad).

But Last of the Mohicans, whoa! Just caught that again last night – the ending is so heartbreakingly epic. Watched it all the time when I was revising for my exams back in the day. Great movie!

  6. Thank you for all the positive affirmations! I did make a conscious effort to choose movies that covered most genres because nothing is worse than watching the same kind of movie over and over again. I’m also really happy I inspired someone to revisit some of the films on my list. I love this project!
