Now, I never really intended to make a special post dedicated to telling people it was my birthday. However, I have some free time, and felt it was a way to squeeze in some of my favourite memories and photos onto my site without it seeming too out of place. Plus, if there is one day I can post something that doesn’t fit my usual criteria, my birthday is that day!
So here we are, my birthday, November 5th. Guy Fawkes Night. The night synonymous with Bonfires, Toffee Apples & Fireworks.
Up until the age of 18 about 7 or 8, I used to believe every bonfire and fireworks show was all for my benefit. Who wouldn’t right? Sadly, the effect of those fantastic treats and then finding out they aren’t for you tarnishes the birthday moment each year. I mean, they are great and all that, but I remember enjoying the spectacle so much more when I thought it was all for me.
Joking aside, my birthday always makes me happy and I love being spoiled on the day. My wife always goes overboard and spends way more than she should. For my 21st Birthday (10 years ago sadly, man I’m old) she bought me a 4ft framed poster of The Godfather: Part II. Signed by them all, De Niro, Pacino, you name it they signed it. All with the official certificate to prove its authenticity. (Movie related, see, not just ego boosting birthday post, still on topic, just!). Despite her family and our friends believing I’m some weird guy obsessed with horror movies, my wife and I have been together since we were 18. This is her on our wedding day, I can’t believe this girl wanted to marry me!?
Pretty sure they were tears of joy she was wiping away………….Her name is Carly, you may have seen her commenting on a few things around here, but honestly she gets more excited to read my good friend Mark’s Trivia Tuesdays than she does my reviews. True story. He does do good trivia 🙂
Back onto my birthday…………
I have always been told I have no heart, no empathy and no conscience. My kryptonite (aside from my wife, obviously) is cats. Growing up I never had pets, and I know some people don’t care about them, and that’s cool. But when Carly & I got our first house together a few years ago, we decided to adopt a couple of little kittens to give them a good home. Here they are, Roxy & Lynx:
They absolutely worshipped me (and Carly, when I wasn’t around) and I loved them so much. As weird as that sounds. Sadly, the beautiful tabby boy, my little man Lynx was run over and we lost him. I was devastated, beyond devastated. What made it worse was that this happened on my birthday. We let him out, as always when he wanted to go he sat by the door, and we never thought anything of it. Until we heard fireworks, and prayed they wouldn’t spook him. Apparently they did and he never came back. Every birthday since has been bitter-sweet really, as I miss that little bastard more than anything, and I would literally give everything I owned to go back to that night and keep him in. But, I can’t, and that’s life. So it means every birthday, and every time I hear fireworks, I think of him. Which is not always a bad thing, as he gave us so many happy memories. And we still have his sister, Roxy, who every morning I come home from work is waiting for me (inside, the little princess doesn’t like the cold outdoors!).
I think subliminally my love of cats may come from one of my all time favourite films, The Godfather. The cat Marlon Brando holds in that film was just a stray cat he found hanging around the set. He just made it part of the film and wouldn’t put it down. He loved cats, so maybe that’s why I feel the way I do. Film are such a huge influence on my life, so who knows. I actually own this piece of artwork:
I recreated this scene so many times with my cats, but couldn’t work out how to take a photo……… because asking someone to do it or admitting I did that would just be weird……..let’s pretend I never said anything 🙂
Enough is enough, and the bottom line is I hope I haven’t bored anyone with my ramblings. It’s my birthday, I’m off out very soon to see our local fireworks show, but I will definitely be thinking of my little dude by the name of Lynx.
Before I leave (and throwing in another film reference, just because I can and want to, and won’t be getting all mushy and soft on you again) I will leave you with my favourite music video from my favourite band recreating my favourite horror film. Please enjoy The Kill by 30 Seconds To Mars and their The Shining inspired video.
Thanks for reading, I’ll be back to normal tomorrow! 🙂

Your wife is very pretty. You are a very lucky man! Besides, that poster she gave you? ALL KINDS OF AWESOME. Lucky, very lucky.
I completely identify with you losing your cat. I lost my dog Quica on the night before my last birthday and it broke my heart. I miss her every now and then but I can’t be too sad because I still have another dog, my beloved Oso, to tend to.
Nice to see you’re a 30STM fan! I like them now, but I LOVED THEM when I was in high school. I even have a 30STM hoodie. I used to think Jared Leto was the coolest guy ever.

Thankyou, she is not bad is she!? The poster is my pride and joy, and I should really post a photo of it up, but we live in a 3 storey town house, its a lot of stairs, Im lazy so I didn’t. Next time though!
Sorry to hear about your dog my friend. Its all the happy memories they give us we have to try remember though isnt it. So many, and I imagine its the same for you. Doesnt make it any less painful though sadly.
Jared Leto is still the coolest guy ever. I always liked his film work and then heard their first album and fell in love. I met him and turned to jelly……Im a grown man but not ashamed of it! Haha thanks for the great comment Fernando, appreciate it.

/ November 5, 2012Happy Birthday Tyson. Now (I mean right now) ask your lovely wife to take a picture of you in the Godfather pose with the cat. That is NOT a weird idea, it’s awesome. It would be even cooler if you could manage a tux and a lapel rose … do you happen to know anyone that could loan you one? I wonder how much it would be to rent one. I think such a portrait would be completely appropriate.

/ November 5, 2012I just started following your blog, so it was nice to find this post, letting me get to know you a bit. Happy birthday, and happy Guy Fawkes Day. Your wife is indeed gorgeous. 🙂 And coming from someone on the dark side of 40 … seriously? 31? You’re a mere child. 😉
Good to know cats are your kryptonite. I’m more into kids and dogs, but I have a deep respect for animal lovers.
As an aside, being American, I’ve never really known what Guy Fawkes Day is all about. Wasn’t he the guy behind the Gunpowder Plot? Are the English celebrating the fact that he didn’t manage to pull it off, or are they applauding his initiative.? 😛
Hope I don’t come off as offensive. I just have a quirky sense of humor.

Maybe it’s a bit like how us Brits see Thanksgiving….not really something we do. But yes you are right, it’s a weird day to celebrate, the failed attempt etc……I agree with you. Still, I get presents and for a few years bonfires and fireworks were just for me!

/ November 9, 2012I was joking about the age thing … you didn’t make me feel old. 🙂 And I know what you mean. When I was your age, I realized it had been 10 years since my college graduation, and that felt weird!
I was also totally kidding about the Guy Fawkes thing. And bonfire and fireworks are always good. Come to think of it, Thanksgiving is kind of an odd thing to celebrate — Europeans invading native American culture and almost starving in the process. 😉 It’s all about the traditions, not necessarily the origin of the holiday.
Glad I discovered your blog.

That is my picture up there, thank you for all the nice comments. You are all right he is very lucky to have me! I’ll never forget trying to get that godfather signed picture into my old ford fiesta in liverpool (which I think had a broken taped up window at the time) and driving over an hr to my house with it. I’m really rubbish at keeping surprises and secrets it was so hard not to let this one slip out.
Anyway I’m very proud of what he’s doing on this site. Despite what he thinks I don’t always check Tuesday trivia first although I do love it Mark. 🙂 I also enjoy reading all the other views and especially the desert island feature.
I’m not a huge horror fan and it surprises me how many of the films he’s reviewed on here I’ve actually seen over the years. I think I’ve blocked a few out of my memory.
Keep up the good work hubby x
