I am frequently asked what my favourite movie of all time is. I’m sure you have been asked this countless times too. I always struggled to answer this, because it depended on my mood, or a million other things, and I felt it was pretty much impossible to give just one film as my definitive answer.
That is until the day I decided to take a different approach to the question. What if I had only enough time left on this planet to watch one film? In the same way as a prisoner on death row gets to choose their last meal, I started to think about my film choice in a similar fashion. What if I could watch just one more movie, and then, Sopranos style, my life just cut to black. What would I choose?
Goodfellas. That was my first answer. Not one of the other incredible movies I have had the privilege of seeing, but Goodfellas. So whenever someone asks me the question now, that’s the answer I go with. I could reel off 20 of my favourite films right now, but there’s no fun for any of you in that, and the point of this post is to ask a question.
My question this week then, if you could choose just one movie and then your life was over, what would you choose to watch? What would be your last chance movie? Unlike my Desert Island project, where people tend to pick 8 films they could watch over and over, this question is really trying to see how you approach it. Ideally I want to see your favourite movie choices, as surely you want to go out with a bang and watch the best film possible, you know, the one you enjoy the most.
It’s all hypothetical of course. I’m not trying to be morbid or looking to get into an emotional ‘where are my loved ones/why is it my last movie/I cant choose one, so here are ten’ type scenario, it’s all meant to be a bit of fun. Please just try and go with it, see if you can pick one film and let me know in the comments section. No poll for a change and I’m not counting to see which film is the most popular, just curious to see what my fellow bloggers favourite movie would be.

Assuming I know it’s my last movie, and then I die, I’m going to want to go out on a happy note. And since I know I’m dying, that may or may not be easy. So it’s got to be a movie that’s guaranteed to put me in a good mood no matter what. And that means The Muppet Movie. I defy anybody to die unhappily after that.

/ November 20, 2012While my favorite movie is Rocky Horror Picture Show (of course along with a slew of others), the one I will watch before I die will be Lynch’s Blue Velvet, that wonderful wonderful slice of creepy Americana. Sure, I’m not American or anything but, man, I love that whole twisted universe Lynch created, with all of its quirky characters, the wonderful music and the superb acting and it gives me such wonderful goosebumps every time I see it. Plus, it would bring a nice sense of coming full circle as the movie was released in the year of my birth.

/ November 20, 2012I`d definitely go with a Miyazaki movie. It would a debate between Howl`s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro but I have to go with the latter. My Neighbor Totoro is a movie that brings me hope and happiness. Joe Hisaishi has beautiful and uplifting soundtrack to match the actual story that Miyazaki gives us. Dying after feeling happy and hopeful sounds like a good plan 🙂

/ November 20, 2012I think I’d pick The Breakfast Club. It’s one of my favourite movies (top 5) from one of my favourite directors but it also has one of my favourite songs in it (Don’t You Forget About Me). Plus, that film helped me a lot growing up and has shaped some of my world views/attitudes.
There’s a whole spectrum of emotions too, with a hopeful ending so I wouldn’t end my life on a downer.

This is one of my top ten (maybe five) films of all time. It was also the first film I watched in 2012 so it may as well be the last as well.

I’m not sure I’d really want to watch a happy movie before I go. I think it would make me want to stay around a while longer, so assuming I’ve whizzed past all the other stages of grief, I’d go with something to help ease me into acceptance: Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.

/ November 20, 2012Hmm…how tricky…Under “normal” conditions I think I would say Gummo, because it is a film I can watch over and over and over again and I always get something new out of it or notice a tiny little detail I hadn’t seen before.
But! Assuming I would be aware of the fact that I would die after this final film, I’m pretty sure I would be drinking heavily throughout, so I would have to go for Bring It On. I must have watched this at least two or three times every year since it came out and it never fails to make me smile. That’s probably the kind of film I’d like to say “good bye, world” with…or more aptly “Burr, it’s cold in here! There must be some Toros in the atmosphere!”

/ May 16, 2013Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Life. Holy Grail was probably their silliest film, and Life Of Brian was their best-written, but neither one made me laugh as hard as this one did. It has the Pythons doing what they do best, pointing out the rediculous futility of everything around us and being hilariously mean and cynical about it. What other film ranges from the sheer fun of The Crimson Permanent Assurance to the surreal and disturbing Live Organ Transplants to the best Grim Reaper ever(“Well, you’re dead now, so shut up!!”)? Too many other classic moments, I could go on and on. And it would be nice to hear “The Universe Song” one more time before I blip out.

/ May 16, 2013I was lucky enough to see all three in the movie theater, the latter two when they first came out, and Holy Grail about a decade after it first came out, at a midnight movie showing. “Meaning of Life” is the choppiest and most uneven of the three, but as you point out, it has several hilarious moments.
