Tranquil Dreams – Desert Island Films

desert island

Kim from Tranquil Dreams has kindly submitted her Desert Island Films. Read on for her choices and reasons, and be sure to check out her site.

*************************************************************************************************

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

*************************************************************************************************

1) Mary Poppins

mary poppins

A cheery and magical musical! I can sing along and kick back and just enjoy myself. I can even dance weird and all and no one would see. Its a fun flick and one of my absolute favorite Disney features. Dick Van Dyke and his accent is just hilarious and I always love to watch Julie Andrews in action. I almost chose The Sound of Music instead of this but being on an island, I’m going to choose something a little more light-hearted.

2) Duel

duel

Steven Spielberg’s first movie and it was pretty kick-ass. I love the intensity and the unknown factor. The lethal version of bullying, mean truck versus a car and the sweet sense of victory here and there. I watch this movie at least 2 times every year so its a personal favorite. Not knowing the next move the truck will pull and facing up to your fears, all those things make this movie just a thrill to watch. Being on an island by myself, this may be the only thrill I have and its always nice to get a bit of adrenaline rushing.

3) 12 Angry Men

12 angry men

Analytical, discussions and prejudice all come into play here. Its a great black and white classic. I’ve loved this movie since I saw it in Grade 10 and I can watch this on repeat. On an island, its always nice to give the brain a little extra exercise and to have a movie that you can never be tired of.

4) My Neighbor Totoro

my neighbor totoro

Studio Ghibli rules in the world of animation for me. Sits pretty much as high as Disney. My Neighbor Totoro is one of my favorite. Its a story about hope, miracles and magic. Totoro is just the form of a cute cuddly big bear, a little silly looking but he’s just an amazing character even though he doesn’t say much. This one holds up with the test of time in my book, maybe its nostalgia kicking in but when I think Studio Ghibli and my favorite animation, I don’t have to put more thought than to think about this one. So its coming with me. Of course, my version has to have Cantonese language though. I’ve never seen it in English yet…haha! Judging from Howl’s Moving Castle (which was the other one I had debated to put in), the voice work was pretty awesome as well, so I’m sure in English it’ll be good.

5) Knight of Gamblers

GodOfGamblers2

I don’t know if anyone knows Stephen Chow but if you do, its probably from Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle. As much as I love those movies, more Shaolin Soccer fan though, his earlier works determined his success to me. Hong Kong comedies are my thing. Its sarcastic, does a lot of word plays and puns, and amongst all, the silly expressions that Stephen Chow pulls are just roll on the floor laughing for me. this is the best of the best absurd comedy. Another name for it is God of Gamblers 2. This is my pick me up movie. If I’m on the island by myself, I’m guessing I’ll eventually some time or another get waves of sadness and loneliness and this movie is the one that will pull me out of that zone and make me laugh non-stop.

6) Juno

juno

This one is cute coming of age story I find. Its one I would bring because I find it creative from the dialogue to the music to the story itself. I love this movie a lot. I don’t exactly know why but if a movie can make me subconsciously thinking or reaching for it when I’m bored, its definitely going with me on the island. I’m sure boredom will consume me sometime or another.

7) Resident Evil

resident evil

Originally, I didn’t want to put any horror in this. Seeing as I do want some form of adrenaline rush and I just adore Alice in Resident Evil. I decided to put this one in, mostly because most other horror, you would never catch me sitting there watching it alone. So this one is alright. I like the Resident Evil series a whole lot and this one was more of a serious movie tone than the rest. My second pick would’ve been Afterlife but then I think I’d get bored of laughing at a movie because its so bad its good. This one has a bit more rewatchability value to me.

8) The Devil Wears Prada

devil wears prada

I have to bring a chick flick. I had a hard time picking just one chick flick but then I didn’t want the whole list to be just that. The Devil Wears Prada is quality work with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway supported by Simon Baker and Emily Blunt. I love them all so much that they have to come with me to the island.

Book:

Your Favorite Seuss

I would bring Your Favorite Seuss: a baker’s dozen by the one and only Dr. Seuss. I love Dr. Seuss so if I’m not bring any movies based on his books, I’m definitely bring the book itself. I never get tired of this so its a must.

Novelty Item:

I’d choose to have my piano with me. I can make my own music and use it to relax and de-stress. My life is fueled by music if I don’t have that at the minimum, I’m not sure I can handle being by myself there for too long. So piano it is!

  2. Very interesting choices, I always love non-standard picks. Great to see some love for Juno too, it’s one of those movies that almost got too popular for its own good and people started turning on it as a result.

    • Really? People started turning on Juno? I can never do it. I got it out of complete randomness because it was a double feature DVD on special. The other feature was Little Miss Sunshine. These movies are pretty high on my awesome scale.

        • That would be cool. My boyfriend suggested a movie that I know everyone likes..but somehow I can’t seem to stay awake in…so I’ll give an entire viewing and then suggest if I still dislike it.

As for the IMDB Top 250 projects…i’m not exactly sure what movies there are to review..haha. I’ll check it out 🙂

  7. Nice choices, and I’m glad to see Totoro there. But why would you want to watch it in Cantonese? Did you mean Japanese?

    • Its a nostalgia thing. I do mean Cantonese because that was the first version I saw. I understand Cantonese and usually the voice work is quite good and its the way I remember it. I’ve actually never tried to watch it in Japanese…definitely something I should do.
