Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Hi guys and gals, I’m Chris from filmhipster and if you’ve ever read my blog you’ll know I’m a man of few words, well at least in my reviews. Thanks Tyson for letting me do this.

First off, I’d like to say that I truly believe that your own life is the most interesting movie you’ll ever see, so make sure you’re the best actor you can be and shoot for that Oscar. However, sometimes you just need to turn off the real world and immerse yourself into another…these are the types of movies that appeal to me. Take me somewhere I’ve never been before.

1) Jaws

You would think the last film you would want to watch stuck on a desert island surrounded by miles of ocean would be Jaws, but it’s hands down my favorite film. Robert Shaw recounting the tale of the sinking Indianapolis to his ‘Chums’ Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider was an epic moment for me and of my love of the big screen. No film captures horror, suspense, laughter and sadness the way Jaws does and thanks to Spielberg’s crafty adaptation of Peter Benchley’s novel, thousands of great whites have perished due to the fear of the poor creature. Was it worth it? Hell’s yeah!

2) Hobo with a Shotgun

Rutger Hauer. Smokes. Shotguns. Hobos. Killer ice skates. Thieves. Creepy Santa Clauses. Manholes. Hookers. Crooked Cops. Seriously, it just screams Desert Island entertainment so I think I’ll just kick back on my rock couch and sip on my coconut drink watching this fantastic grindhouse revival.

3) The Omega Man

I’m not choosing this apocalyptic thriller because of its cinematic brilliance, but because of its re-watch-ability. It wasn’t done all that well and the zombies aren’t very creepy, but it’s a lot of fun and holds a special place in my heart. There’s something really appealing to me when Charlton Heston ventures out collecting supplies and setting traps by day and then gets bombarded by zombies in his secluded safe house at night. It was my first look into an end-of-the-world scenario and my first taste of horror…or comedy, depending on how you interpret it.

4) Drive

No film has moved me more in the last 12 years like Nicolas Winding Refn’s – Drive. It’s a perfect film that will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the best of the 21st century. It’s intense like Scarface and passionate like Casablanca. Don’t tell anyone but sometimes when I drive down the highway I’ll play this soundtrack and pretend I’m Ryan Gosling…without the hammer of course.

5) Reservoir Dogs

Not sure if you’ve heard of him…Quentin Tarantino? He’s one of the best director’s of all time and I’ve got to include one of his films. I’ll take Reservoir Dogs over Pulp Fiction but it’s a close race. A robbery so intense, a torture so cruel and a bleeding thief so incognito. If Shakespeare was a filmmaker in the nineties, this poetry would have been his film.

6) Life Is Beautiful

I don’t think I would have appreciated this film as much if I didn’t have a little wee one of my own. This modern masterpiece incorporates laughter, love with tragedy like no other and its central character Guido will, and forever be my hero.

7) Akira

Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s frenzied directing style never lets up as he mixes a graphically violent razzle-dazzle with a moody ominous soundtrack. The animation, at the time, was way ahead of its day and it’s complex theme still baffles me…and I’ve watched it over 100 times.

8) Goodfellas

A list isn’t complete without Goodfellas. It’s truly one of the best stories ever told featuring Wiseguy Joe Pesci, nuff said.

BOOK

I would have loved to have picked ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ by George R.R. Martin but that’s a long series spanning many books and illegal according to the Desert island rules. So….I’ll choose this slightly ripped off version of Treasure Island, but just as good.

LUXURY ITEM

I’m assuming the desert island comes with a Blu-ray player so I won’t need that…instead I’ll have to bring something that reminds me of home and the most important part of my life, a picture of my daughter. She’s all the luxury I’ll need to get through this long life on a Deserted Island. Well at least I’ll have a shark, a Wisguy, Quentin Tarantino, zombies and a hobo to share my time with.

Wait, do we get rescued Tyson? Or do we have to wait 11 years to see what happens like ‘Rescue from Gilligan’s Island’. I mean really, why bother with this film if Ginger doesn’t bother showing up? Anyway, I’ll save my griping for my blog.
