As we approach the end of the year, I want to try and get your thoughts on 2012 in terms of movies. I know a lot of people are writing their year-end lists, favourites, top tens etc and rather than do my own I figured I would just try and get some thoughts from my readers and share them all here.
To be honest, I don’t go to the cinema that much. Mainly because I get very angry at people grazing on their popcorn, chewing loudly and basically annoying me. That being said, there are exceptions and some films have to be seen on the big screen. Most of the time though I wait for the blu ray, and love nothing more than watching a high-definition film in the comfort of my own home.
To end the year, I want to do a 3 part question time, and I’ll kick off by asking what your WORST movie experience has been this year. I want to know which movie has annoyed you, frustrated you, and made you demand those 90 minutes or so back. It doesn’t have to be one you have seen in the cinema, it can be one you have seen at home, but it must be a 2012 release that you have seen and not just read terrible reviews about! I only want the bad stuff here today, naturally I’ll be asking for the better ones tomorrow! So just hit me with the worst piece of crap you have seen this year, and let me know why you detest it so much. Or maybe you were just let down by it. Whatever your feelings, please share them below.
For me, it has to be The Devil Inside. If you fancy clicking the title you will see my review and why I hated it, but basically I’m frustrated it took so much money when there are so many brilliant films that go unseen. I will also throw in an honourable mention for Kill List. Now, before the lovers of that film get on my case, I will say that my reason for placing it here is simple; HYPE. Honestly, especially over here in the UK, and more specifically on horror sites, Kill List was getting the kind of praise that has people like me counting down the seconds until I can see it. Then I watched it, and kept waiting for it to get going, then it went all weird and it ended. To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement. So that’s why it makes my runner-up spot, purely because of how let down I felt after watching it. That’s not the films fault as such, I shouldn’t of bought into the hype. It was still a decent film, but that was it. Kill List stands out as my biggest disappointment movie wise from 2012.

/ December 29, 2012I was very disappointed with The Dark Knight Rises. Probably on my own with this and get some flak, but it was supposed to be a Batman film, so Batman was supposed to be in it for the majority of the film. But he and Commissioner Gordon were both laid up for ages.

That’s to be expected from kids movie sequels, though, as they’re only made to milk more money out of parents so I’ll actually go with Sinister as being the worst. WTF? Was that meant to be scary? It was stupid. But I only went to it for Ethan Hawke. And, as a huge Alien & Aliens fan, I have to agree that Prometheus was by far the biggest disappointment (but not worst movie).

/ December 29, 2012To be fair, I’m very picky on horror movies and very old school – I’ve liked hardly any since the late 70s/early 80s. Sinister started out with real potential – what Ethan Hawke watches (don’t want to give anything away) is very creepy. It had a real “The Strangers” vibe at the start (liked that one! that was pretty creepy) but then got very silly & very predictable. Could have been worse but definitely could have been better. I’m in the “less is more” horror camp and the movie started out that way.

/ December 29, 2012I normally work really hard to avoid bad movies, and thus am able to avoid the majority of them. However, I’m a sucker for popcorn flicks, so Taken 2 and Battleship are the only two bad movies I saw. Battleship was what I expected, cheap, over-the-top, almost boring set-piece after set-piece. While Taken 2 took everything that was great about the first movie, and made it all boring. But I didn’t hate either one of them, but I didn’t really enjoy them either.

/ December 29, 2012I should mention that I really haven’t recovered from the remake of “Clash of the Titans.” That movie had it all: cheesy special effects, a script written by a third grader with crayons … it was a proud successor to the original, which was also dreadful but I firmly believe that the remake outdid the original … which was not easy, especially considering that they had a cast of exceptionally talented actors playing the worst roles of their lives. Everyone must have a few quick bucks. I can’t even imagine any other reason to make that movie. I can’t figure out why it got made at all, much less financed.

The story was dull and uninspired, the action scenes were weak and when Batman was in it, he was just as dull and uninspired as the story. And I totally agree about Kill List, very disappointed.

Good lord, what a pile of crud…an unimaginative rehash of the other three films in the series, and boring as hell. And my biggest disappointment, even though it was well-made, was ‘Hitchcock’: I was expecting a story centering on Hitchcock and the making of ‘Psycho’, not his wife’s love affair with a writer friend. Read the book instead!

/ December 29, 2012My worst viewing experience came from Beyond The Black Rainbow. Waited for it to hit my local art house/ indie theater for some time. I went into the theater triumphant, and left the theater kicking my 32 oz of Dr. Pepper.
Also, I didn’t care for the sci-fi movie Love, I think you reviewed that a while back. The parts that weren’t completely bland were lifted from much better material.

As far as bad ones go I nominate Prometheus as not only the worst film of the year, but the worst film of the last twenty years. I wouldn’t say I was disappointed – as it was exactly what I expected. But it was just the monumental stupidity of it all which left me gobsmacked and stunned. I don’t remember ever having my intelligence was so blatantly insulted by a film – ever. The only other film which came close this year was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Simply woeful in every way. At least it was a preview screening I attended and I didn’t have to shell out cash for this godawful mindless shite. But it irks me that I’ll never have those one hundred and five minutes back again.

I wasn’t surprised it was bad but nonetheless – the worst of 2012 for me. Prometheus was extraordinarily disappointing but not nearly as bad overall as The Devil Inside but then again it is like comparing Solaris to The Blair Witch Project…apples…oranges. John Carter. The main character was a dull cliche with a one dimensional personality. He was so bland, you would think Stephanie Meyers created him. The chemistry between the leads was forced. I didn’t care one whit about what happened to any of the characters. The script was just sub par in every way. I’m actually mad at myself for having sat through it.
Dark Shadows. I love Johnny Depp. His work in Sweeney Todd was amazing. I adore Edward Scissorhands, and Jack Sparrow is my dream man. However, this film was so awful it had me hating Johnny for agreeing to take this piece of crap role. I don’t care if your friends are all a part of it, if it sucks, don’t get involved. The script seems to have been written by someone who thinks the idea of someone commenting dryly on common items that are alien to them, because the are from the past, is hilarious. That is pretty much what the entire movie relies on. A running gag of poorly constructed observational humor told in a straight laced manner. It was painful.

Johnny Depp will never be better for me than he was in Donnie Brasco. I think he is excellent in pretty much everything, but I am yet to see Dark Shadows.

/ December 31, 2012His character in dark shadows was really unlikable. There is nothing Johnny could have done about it. The character itself is just bad.
His character had no charm, no wittiness, no charisma, no tact, no distinguishable emotions, and would blurt out bizarre things that no one from the time frame he was supposed to be from with a fully functional brain would ever say in running gags that were unfunny. It was torture watching him play such a poorly constructed character.

/ December 30, 2012Dark Knight Rises, It felt like it should have been truly more…Like an epic struggle of Batman against the Unstoppable Bane….But what we got was annoying Catwoman bits, Fox/Gordon not being in most of it and TWO parts of Bruce becoming Batman again. Of the three big superhero movies this year, TDKR was at the bottom, But im a Spider-man guy, so what do i know?

/ January 1, 2013I don’t get to the cinema as much as I’d like. Partly due to the fact that Tyson pretty much wants to kill someone each time we go. I travel a lot for work to Hong Kong and back so have plenty of time to catch up on films then, although its not the best way to watch them. I tend to keep the ones I really want to see for Blu Ray.
I’m afraid two of mine feature Johnny Depp nothing personal :). Rum diary was disappointing and agree with the comment above about Dark Shadows I didn’t make it to the end.
I was looking forward to Prometheus being a big Alien fan but was greatly disappointed.

/ January 1, 2013As a UK resident, it came down to 2 movies… Either 1) The Three Stooges or 2) Keith Lemon: The Film. Only one of those was released internationally so any US readers will never have the unfortunate chance to see Keith Lemon. I’ve seen people saying Ice Age 4, Prometheus, whatever… But you have no idea what bad is until you see Keith Lemon. And The Three Stooges? That ‘humour’ doesn’t translate to UK audiences. Just plain stupid. And boring.

/ January 1, 2013I know what you mean about those distractions in the theater! My father and I ended up seeing two films in the theaters two nights in a row: “The Hobbit” (which I really loved, despite my dislike for the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy…a personal opinion; it just doesn’t cater to my tastes) and then “Skyfall” (which I also greatly enjoyed, partly for Javier Bardem’s performance). During “The Hobbit,” we sat directly infront of a family with a two year old who kept kicking my seat, crying, and getting up to run up and down the aisles. The next night, during “Skyfall,” there was a two-year-old child in the back of the theater constantly calling out. I could understand taking a kid to “The Hobbit,” since I’ve heard that parents will take their children with them to sleep during movies instead of paying for a babysitter (I understand it, but I’m pretty sure I don’t agree with it), but in “Skyfall?” Really?!?
I wouldn’t call it one of the worst, but I was pretty disappointed in “Chernobyl Diaries.” It’s my own fault for holding such high expectations of it, but that film ended up being quite the let-down. Sorry to say it because the history behind the film is so interesting, but “Red Tails” was also a major let-down for me.

Worst Movie: Cold Light of Day. Even with Bruce Willis & Sigourney Weaver this movie flat out sucked. Most incoherent movie I have ever sat through.

/ January 2, 2013Oh, why I detest The Lucky One: schmaltzy, predictable, sappy, silly, unrealistic; the usual from Mr. Nicholas Sparks. And it has one of the worst antagonists I have had the misfortune to see.
Taylor Schilling is eye candy, so that’s a little good. Truly though, the only form of entertainment I found from it is the sound of my own voice offering a commentary to make the film better.

Sure, the humour was there, but the heroes fought with each other too much. And not the real antagonist. Let-down, big time.

/ January 3, 2013That was one is decent. Sometimes tedious and a bit too long, but usually good nonetheless. I’ll give you that. But that does also prove that, as of late, Sandler is appreciated most when he’s merely just acting and not writing or producing. I still have love for the guy, and I’m really hoping he gets himself a shovel to dig out of that hole sometime soon. I doubt Grown Ups 2 will help it.
Initially, I enjoyed Jack and Jill… But, I think that’s because I was still in denial of a Sandler movie being actually bad… And that was before I started to think of films in a more critical way hahah!
The four main jokes weren’t even funny! No one cares that he has a weird accent but he doesn’t hear it; no one cares he has buck teeth and his name is Bucky; and really no one cares that he has a small penis that pre-ejaculates when he sees anything that resembles a boob. I just saved anyone from a 90-minute torture fest…
If you’re going to have background noise, at least make it be good background noise 😉

I’d love to get paid that much… The day when people just stop going to his movies will be a funny one. I don’t think that’d happen though 😦
