Rampage (2009)

rampage movie poster

A man with a thirst for revenge builds a full body armor from Kevlar and goes on a killing spree.

Earlier today, in the first part of ‘Boll Day‘ I reviewed Seed, which up until 2007 was in my opinion the best work done by the infamous Uwe Boll. Here we are then with what I would class as the best film he has made, period.

One of my favourite movies is the 1993 Michael Douglas starring vehicle Falling Down. That’s about a man who gets frustrated with the various flaws he sees in society, and then begins to psychotically and violently lash out. Rampage actually reminded me about that movie, albeit being a much darker version.

Rampage movie suit

The main problem with trying to persuade you to see a movie like Rampage is the premise. It is very realistic, and unfortunately there have been instances where events like this have happened in real life. I’m not here to go over them, or do a Piers Morgan (who is a prick, and being British I don’t want him back over here, despite the petition from the good people in the US trying to have him deported!) and talk about gun laws. I just want to talk about a good action movie, which has a clever twist, and not get into the real life situations. Hope that’s cool with you 🙂

Rampage movie bill

There is no clever plot to speak of with Rampage. We meet Bill Williamson (Brendan Fletcher, who does a fantastic job here), a 23-year-old man, who lives with his parents, works a low-paid job as a mechanic and feels bombarded with the problems of the world. Bill has a friend named Evan Drince (Shaun Sipos) who shares his hatred. The first half of the movie is spent watching these two interact, have a few issues in a diner, and just venting their thoughts to each other. This is mixed in with seeing Bill at home talking with his parents, about the usual mundane, everyday life stuff. Every now and again we get little glimpses/flashforwards of Bill burning something, or making something, and it gives off a clever insight into what is to come.

shaun sipos

The second half of the movie really picks up the pace, and this is where we see Bill in a Kevlar vest going around town massacring people. His motives only really become clear near the end, and even then there is room for you to fill in the blanks yourself. Is he really an idealist who believes massacring a load of innocent people will help solve the worlds problems. Or is he a very clever, calculating sociopath who sees this as a means to an end (by which you will have to see what his ‘end’ is). Not many Boll films make me think, and that’s why I rate Rampage as his best work.

Of course, being about a guy who goes on a shooting spree, there are lots of deaths. People get shot, a few get blown up and there is the odd stabbing. Yet despite all this, it isn’t as brutal and gory to look at as something like Seed, or any of the more Hollywood torture/horror movies like SAW & Hostel. It’s really about the subject matter, and some may find it insensitive, or bad taste, and that’s fine, steer clear. But if you can look past that and are willing to see it as a violent thriller, you might actually like it (well, rate or appreciate since like doesn’t really feel appropriate).

rampage movie

Rampage does have some negatives. There is some ropey dialogue, and I feel as though we don’t get much of a build up of Bill before he goes on his spree. More specifically, how he got hold of all the guns and ammo he had. Yet these were just minor quibbles. The worst thing is that it is shot with the annoying shaky cam. Which I have mentioned before in reviews, and sometimes it serves a purpose. I just didn’t enjoy seeing it utilised in Rampage. When two people are sat at a table chatting, I want to be able to see them, and not get nauseous whilst the camera moves all around the place, sometimes getting half a head in shot. Frustrating, and my main criticism of the film. Yet when we are witnessing the rampage later on, we get to see it from Bill’s point of view, and it is very reminiscent of games such as Call of Duty and it does work well.

Amazingly Rampage holds a 6.3/10 average rating on IMDb, which for a Boll film is incredible! They are normally around 1 or 2, so signs of improvement for sure. I agree with this average, and I feel a 6 rating here is pretty good going. It’s a short movie, there is no real padded out scenes. Bill does so many clever things in setting up and planning his rampage, so kudos to Boll with the script here. Proof he can work well when he writes his own stuff and doesn’t just adapt video games. It may not be a film to sit down and enjoy as such, but if you like a good action thriller and can put up with some shooting, the ending may well make it worth your time.

  1. Hilarious. I have watched Rampage, on crackflix not to long ago. Didn’t even know that was Uwe, wasn’t paying to much attention. It actually wasn’t to bad a flick at all. I’ve seen worse.

AMEN Ryan!! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO – No matter how hard TC tries. I will go on record and say that he is NOT my least favorite most abhored director in the history of cinema – that would go to Ulli Lommel – the WORST of the WORST. Boll just SUCKS. I might have to start working out and go box this mother to a pulp.

You have a very steep uphill battle with this one, my GOOD friend. I applaud your effort but I think people have been burned enough by this bastard to go back into the pool. At least I admit he’s not THE WORST!

I understand – I give you love whether you like Boll’s stinking turds or not. But they are what they are (to me) stinky shit. But, in his goddamn defense, not as bad as Lommel’s. WTF am I out here talking about??? They both SUCK IT!!!!!

BUT, for the sake of this post, have you seen Rampage before you totally dismiss the man? I know you have seen worse, Ive seen you score films terribly low (deservedly, not trying to say your wrong lol), but I guarantee this will be better than some of them! Regardless of the director, I stand by it, Rampage is a good film 😛

I haven’t seen it – but I’ll offer up this. Once you tell me you have a copy of Amber Lake OR May in your possession, I’ll get ahold of Rampage and give it a shot. The ball is in your court my man. I even give you a choice – I will not watch something with animal torture so SEED is off the table (one of the main reasons I hated SNOWTOWN so much).

It’s hard, because on IMDB people hate the ending, then others love it. Personally, I like the clever way of interpreting the ending (not trying to sound pretentious, hard to explain without giving it away!). If you ever see it, come back and we can chat about what you think went down! 🙂

Tyson, I saw this movie not long ago and I did think it was okay, but the biggest issue I had was for how long he kept shooting the street up, and NO police arrived! LOLOL!!! There would have been a SWAT team there by the time he could reload with the stuff he was doing; heck, they may have even sent an army tank after him! lol.

I wanted to ask, how do you get your entries condensed on your home page instead of the full entry being displayed? Did you have to upgrade for those options? I am trying to find a good layout for my blog, and I would like to have multiple entries condensed on my homepage opposed to having each and every entry fully displayed.

I joke. Simply click the ‘read more tag’ or something along those lines, above your post when your creating a new one. Just one of the icons next to proof reading and stuff. I always write a brief plot summary that will show on the home page, then press the button and it makes a line on your page for you. That will then appear like mine, and you have to click ‘continue reading’/ Should be easy enough, any trouble just ask, Ill have a proper look 🙂

Okay, I will try that. Thnx for the info.! Also, do you know how to select which photo from the entry I want to display to represent the entry on the homepage? I always thought it used the first photo from the entry by default, (which would be fine) but then when I published my last two entries it started using random photos from my entries, and I am not sure how the heck to select the photo I want. Sounds simple enough, but can’t seem to be able to figure it out…

Yes, that did it thanks; I never noticed all those other features; one other little thing…when I use the “Read More” feature and you click “Continue reading” on the article and takes you a couple sentences farther down in the entry. Is there a way to set it up so when they click on “read more” it will lead them to the following sentence opposed to a couple sentences down? Thanks for all your help. 🙂

I’ll look for this one as well. I want to figure what motivates people like this. The trouble in their minds perceived or real doesn’t excuse their acts but at least maybe we can learn from it. Falling Down was an excellent Michael Douglas film. Never quite looked at a McDs the same way. Excellent review.

Love Falling Down!! Might have to review that soon, due a rewatch! Cheers buddy, always appreciate your comments 🙂

I need to separate fact from fiction in my head on this one given the most recent spate of mass killings by troubled people. Gun Control, as you well know, is again a political hot potato here in the U.S. Over the decades of covering these stories for TV News, we were always tasked with answering the “WHY” question along with the other elements including victims, collateral damage, etc. I absolutely HATED doing these stories. Daily random violence gets you a weekly body count that numbs many people or leaves them indifferent. A lot of us found it impossible to be indifferent or numb. There’s the rub in real life and also in reel life when it comes to films like “Rampage”. I can really enjoy the cartoonish Stallone, Arnold, Van D., Segal, Willis, etc pixs but other films where the violence is overwhelming without relief are not my cups of tea. Just one old reporter’s (and film buff) opinion.

    • Hey Garry!

I appreciate it’s tricky, thats why I put the bit in about me not wanting to get into a stance and offer my thoughts on the current spate of these events happening. I was just offering my thoughts on a movie, but felt I should make it clear.

I don’t know how you, or anyone, could cope having to deal with this first hand, on the front line so to speak.

I love the films you mention, where its more entertaining violence than anything else, cartoonish, as you say. Sometimes I do like a film to be realistic, and on occasions these stories which have real life effects are too much for some people. I appreciate that, of course, and always try to offer an honest opinion on a movie and not get on my soap box about moral issues. One of the reasons I do this site is to offer up films most places don’t, but it’s great to get mixed opinions and reactions, provoking thoughts etc and always love you stopping by with yours 🙂

  11. I can’t watch most movie violence. Nothing involving children or animals, anything realistic nor any kind of torture. It’s not squeamishness; it’s a lot deeper than visceral. Probably my own history, but I deal with it. If I know it’s coming, I will try to leave or failing that, hide my face in my hands until I think it’s over. Yet, like my husband, I can watch heavily produced, special effects laden fake violence in stuff like “Collateral Damage.” If it’s obviously fake I’m OK.

    • I never really have a problem watching violence. Not that I am some weirdo that enjoys it, I just mean I can compartmentalize it some how. I appreciate most people dont like it, and thats cool, to each their own, and I understand where your coming from. My wife is the same as you, watches most things through her hands 🙂

For me, animals suffering is the one that gets me. Ive seen Cannibal Holocaust, and whilst most people talk about the human torture being the worst, for me its what happens to the poor animals. Maybe because I love my pets with everything I have. Its a strange one.

Thanks, as always, for sharing your thoughts Marilyn 😛

  12. I’ve mentioned this before,Tyson, but I really love revenge movies, and I think I can handle violent films best when the person or people doing the damage, the ‘bad’ guys, get what’s coming to them in the end.

For example: I absolutely loved ‘Hostel’, and I can believe it could easily be based on reality, and I can see where what goes on could be really hard to stomach for some…but I LOVED the fact that one guy, the ‘good’ guy, goes after the film’s antagonists with a sweet and satisfying vengeance. Now, if these antagonists had been our film’s heroes, and received no payback or comeuppance, then I would have no interest in it whatsoever.

Is that a strange way to look at a film? I’m trying to think of movies I liked where the bad guys win, and all I can come up with is ‘Quick Change’…but that was a comedy, so maybe it shouldn’t count!

I get what your saying, not strange at all. I like a happy ending to a movie, but I also like a dark one which sometimes can make a film. I would put Rampage in that category. Obviously dark, but quite clever really. But no happy endings here, not after a massacre anyway.

      Cheers Todd 🙂

And I was thinking about this discussion last night…I love film noir, so I have no problem with unhappy endings, but I think it’s not when bad guys win at the end that bothers me, or the good guys lose…it’s when the absolute assholes win, and no one makes them pay for their actions. I guess what I’m trying to say is, if I watch a movie, I get a bigger kick out of watching bad guys get their due than I do seeing good guys fail.

Except in film noir, which I love no matter what! 🙂

I can honestly say I have never seen this one and do not plan to. Your review was great, very insightful, but I just can’t stand the guy. His work is just garbage, plain and simple. I applaud your efforts to change our minds, but I have seen his work. I know all about his shaky cam happiness and how much he loves it – Alone In The Dark is unwatchable in spots. I don’t know if you have seen that one or not. It stars Christian Slater and Tara Reid and Stephen Dorff, if you can believe it.
