A Call To Arms

social-networking-logos

I just want to do something a little different today, as I want to see if there is a way we can help each other bring a few more visitors to our sites. It requires hardly any effort, and could benefit us all in the long run.

You may have heard about the changes google has made to its search engine. Or more specifically, it’s image searches. If you haven’t heard about it, you may well of noticed a decline in visitors to your site in the past few days. Cutting a long story really short, when someone used to search on google for an image, if it was one you had on your site and someone clicked it, you got a ‘view’. Now google have changed it, meaning people no longer have to visit your site to get the image, hence no ‘view’. This has been bad for a lot of sites, reporting a loss of 30-50% in traffic, and worse for those that depend on traffic to make money, or if they are selling the images etc.

I’m not too fussed about these changes, its frustrating but that’s how it is. I just want to try and find a new way (that’s not new, of course, but new to me!) of bringing in visitors. Underneath all of my reviews (and most of yours) are the sharing buttons. I don’t think these are utilised enough, and have taken it upon myself to use them more. I started a little test at midnight last night with them all, and submitted a couple of my own links on StumbleUpon, Reddit, LinkedIn, Diggit & Tumblr. I’m here to ask if you would mind sharing one of my links, any review you like, and just let me know in the comments below which one you shared and on which site. I will then of course hit up your site and spread the link of one of your posts on all the sharing sites. They are all free to sign up to, and some just require a name, that’s it. Once you have done it once, every post from then on could be shared in a matter of seconds.

help-me-help-you-300x167

As an example, one link for my review of Casino was posted on Reddit this morning and brought in 48 views in 10 minutes. Casino got 25 hits from StumbleUpon within half an hour. Whilst I appreciate these viewers probably visited and then left, if even just 1 or 2 people stick around and come back, then it’s worth doing it. My aim is to share the results I get, and hopefully you all get, so we can see if any of these sharing options are viable sources of traffic improving methods. Plus, they are free so we may as well all try help each other out, if your up for it! I hope some of you join me, and I know some already have, so thank you again to those that I have spoken with about it on Facebook, and please, if everyone else could start sharing my stuff and I will reciprocate in full!! Even if just a handful of people help me trial it I will be hugely grateful!

Moving on slightly, I must apologise to anyone on Facebook for my relentless spamming! I set up a site Facebook account yesterday, and have been adding people that I have seen. Please, if you are on Facebook, feel free to add me as a friend, and ‘like’ the Head In A Vice Facebook page. It is much appreciated, and more importantly it has instant messaging, so we can chat easily, which I have done with some of you and has been good fun! I might even start a mass movie watching, chat room review with a few of us chatting and watching at the same time, then condensing it into a mass review. Could be fun, I’ll work on something if I can drag some of you in!!

I know some of you don’t really care about stats and views, and that’s cool. But if you are interested in potentially bringing in a few extra people to see your stuff, I hope you don’t mind me posting this call to arms. Since I’m asking a lot of you, and I want more Facebook love, I should give something back. Whilst most of you know I use a pseudonym to write with, none of you know what I look like. I’m always asked to put a photo up, as people like to know who they are chatting with. And since I chat with A LOT of you, and know what you look like, it’s only fair if I show you my face. So, as a treat, I have included a photo of myself. Since Eric did it a couple of weeks ago and showed off his sexy smile, I have to bite the bullet and showcase myself. Be nice, I’m very self conscious and will just edit any mean comments 🙂

  4. Ty, I can appreciate your sentiment here. Its not easy to ask for help like that, I know that myself. I’ve done it. Unfortunately I think I ALREADY like you on FB and follow you on Twitter. LOL 😦

Stumble Upon is a fickle mistress. Initially, I would get thousands of views a day… but eventually somehow their spam algorithms caught on to me and now I get poop. LOL 😦 I have NEVER figured out how Reddit works. Maybe my content isnt right for them… If you wind up with suggestions, please let me know. I’ve had some half hearted attempts at starting “Reddit Circles” which never took off 😦

Perhaps the Lamb forums is an appropriate place to raise this as a topic?

Regardless, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for what we all can do, and I’m very very supportive of the spirit of this post. 😉

    • Yeah your already linked to me Fogs, thanks for that!! 🙂

Its a strange one really, as Im more than happy with the views and comments I get, and I see plenty of people who are better writers than me get no love whatsoever. I think this is more experimental than anything, I just want to know if any of these options are viable, you know, and ultimately worth it. If it helps other people out, thats what Im aiming for.

When you say you got 1000’s from StumbleUpon, wow thats insane!! Reddit seems good but they dont let you link your own stuff very often, hence why I would aim for people to link my stuff, and Ill do theirs, so no one gets in trouble for spamming them! Seems more target organised on there, as people are looking for movies etc

Much appreciate your feedback and thoughts as always Fogs, hopefully we can find something useful from at least one of these sharing options! 🙂

I know, I mean it bothers me that views are down, but my images arent mine so to speak (apart from my photo, hopefully no modelling agencies steal it lol). But for those people like yourself who has so many of your own photos on your blog, I dont know how they can do it. In reality, the truth is rather than in the past where you searched, then clicked the image and went to someones site, you now stay on google, unless you click again to see the persons site. SO effectively google added an extra click, which we know is not good, as why would you click again when the image you want is there for you already with google.

People in uproar on forums etc, closing down businesses etc……drastic measure I know, but Im not sure what will be done. 😦

Like you, I always hoped that if just 1 or 2 stick around then its worth it. Hence what these methods are for, to see if I can do something new, and getting others to do it too, maybe will drive us traffic to all our sites from somewhere else. Or not 🙂

  18. Nice pic, dude! I noticed how image searches had changed recently but I didn’t connect it all to people losing hits. I don’t think I even get new readers through image searches, since the same few images seem to get hits all the time with no comments made. Obviously those people aren’t reading. (Of course, I’ll admit that I would miss the weird text searches if they stopped showing up; how can you live without knowing that someone out there on this very day is looking for “philip mckeons bulge” or “using rum for clearing demons.”) But I can see how this greatly affects people who make money off their sites, so thanks for the explanation.

Don’t be shy, it’s not a matter whether you’re hideous or not. It’s a fact that people are now their own brands. Sell yourself first or secondarily because there’s a lot of competition.
Your original point of increasing traffic through the social media is correct & important. When they get to their destination (hopefully, our sites), people need to know who’s spewing what. It’s an audience, they’re watching & wondering.

        • The eye candy comment was purely tongue in cheek. But your right about the image selling, and our sites need a good image as that can sometimes be the hook to get people in. Sometimes content isnt enough. People can make their assumption from a logo, or a design, etc and decide its not for them. Fickle basically, but thats human nature.

It definitely helps knowing who is doing the talking though. Anyway we can get people to look at our stuff has to be worth exploring.

        • Reddit is its own universe, like any of the social media sites. I will, at times, use the share button under my posts & on pages to manually share to either of my Facebook accounts. More so for friends who might (usually not) be interested. Often, because it indicates my attention & presence on FB. I’ve tried previously using an actual FB page. That’s problematic, as many of my “friends” consider a page, related to my account, to be superfluous & have only given it token visits. I feed my posts onto one of my Twitter accounts, which accounts for many more hits. Non-bloggers seldom leave comments & it is they who I target, outside the walled garden that WordPress has set up for us all. I have few comments & just as many “likes”, because my readership is outside of WordPress & its blogger community. Which community I do admire & treasure. Therefore, I dispatched the “like” button & have kept the sharing button, if anyone has noticed (probably not). We all have our own preferences to which kinds of traffic we wish to receive, as well as our own purposes for creating a blog site, which is a website.
If I am able to get to a reasonable comprehension level for Reddit, I’ll let you know personally. After all, the internet has always been about learning as we go, learning from each other & picking up whatever we can over time. Later!

With Reddit you need to be careful with posting your own links as it is against their rules and you get uppity Mods either blasting you via both private and public messages or they simply ban you completely (as they did to me when I first joined because I didn’t bother to read the rules). Stumble Upon can also be a bit precious in this respect too which always baffled me if promoting websites is their chief aim!

  26. Yeah, the traffic question is a tough one. I never have figured out exactly how to drive any serious traffic places — though I will say I seem to get almost as many hits from IMDb now as I do from Google. The image search drop certainly hurt, but I find it too hard to be concerned — I sincerely doubt any of those views ever actually read anything, let alone stuck around or commented.

I try to be good about hitting the Twitter and Facebook buttons, but it’s an easy thing for me to forget.

      • No… I add my reviews to the external reviews list. Get about 20 hits on an average day, but sometimes it can be a lot more. Got a couple hundred the first week after Mockingbird Lane aired, for example. It all kind of comes down to hitting the sweet spot where people are interested in finding out about a movie, but not a lot of people have written reviews of it. That way, lots of people are checking out the IMDb page, but there isn’t much competition for the outgoing traffic. Considering the types of movies you review, you might find a lot of your movies fall into that category.

When I first moved over to wordpress I used reddit and got a lot of views; on my review of Stakeland I got of 1500 views…in a day. Stumbleupon gave me on average 30 to 40 views (I think) then suddenly nothing from either site. Stumbleupon sometimes gives me the odd 3 or 4, but, reddit? The big zero. I don’t share anything on it any more although I’ve left the share button up. :-/

I went through a phase of stumbling upon all my posts when they went up, and sometimes it brought in a ton of views. I never bothered with reddit or tumblr though, but I’ll try anything once (except incest or haggis. Ugh) . Imdb links are good for bringing in viewers too, especially if your site’s name comes near the beginning of the alphabet (or if you’re Roger Ebert, oddly enough).

Had a thought while I was reading this. Want to set up a secret group on FB where we can go in and post requests for various types of shares? I’d do the “work” of setting it up, if there are folks that want to try it. You have waaay more followers and commenters than I do, so it would be smarter to have you issue the invite to folks that are interested.

    • As much as I would love to take credit, and I have stumbled various peoples posts in the past, I cant say for sure it was me. Probably not. But I have done them on and off, this is my effort at making it more of a team thing and getting us all to help each other! 🙂

If you make it on Facebook, just drop me a message on there and I’ll share it out, no worries, sounds good!! Thankyou 😛

  34. Reddit doesn’t accept anything from me anyhow. Stumple upon is lame and almost as bad as Google viewer in stripping away the orinating information. Digg is trying to make a comeback and maybe they’ll succeed. So far, not so much. I get a lot of hits from Facebook and Twitter (I have a lot of followers through Twitter, too). I’ve severed my shares to Google and deleted the “Publicize” link. Ironically, I have gotten a huge amount of traffic through Google … until they decided to just steal it. Right now, it’s mostly affecting photographers, but they will get to us, too. If they get away with this, the writers are next. They got a new CEO in 2011 who decided “no more Good Guy” … let’s make some money and kick some ass. We’re a vulnerable group. We aren’t powerful, we don’t have money. The only power we have EVER had is the ability to make a lot of noise and we should do that and keep doing it. If we don’t and they get away with this, we won’t be blogging next year. It will be over.

    • I think google images was the best source for a lot of people. Im lucky in the sense that most of my viewers and commenters are fellow bloggers, and only a few were image searchers. I dont think we will be forced out, as long as you keep writing your followers will keep reading. 🙂 We just need to find new ways to bring in extra readers.

PS: You look very young, I imagined you as being older? Good job on linking a face to the writer persona :-). Mine, you can see of course on facebook.

Hey, Gary (What a WONDERFUL name!!!!!), I love your photograph!! You look like a very nice, amiable young man who everyone likes. Sounds like central casting’s idea for a sociopath. Seriously, Marilyn has clued me into the Google problem and how it impacts so many folks around the world. I hope it can be resolved before too many creative people are driven away in despair.

    • LOL, thanks GARRY!! My wife says I have all the traits for a sociopath! 🙂

Yeah Marilyn is rightly annoyed about all the changes, and its not good for so many people as you say. Especially those trying to make a living. I’m sure there are people trying to do something about as we speak, lets hope they succeed! Thanks for stopping by as always my friend 🙂

I was just wondering which subreddit you’re posting to is all. I can’t seem to find an active movie review-oriented one.

        • I just selected movies. It normally says on the right how many are in ‘movies’, and I’ve seen numbers up to 3000 people in there. Thats as far into it as Ive gone so far 🙂

Ah okay. /r/movies never seems to have many reviews in it, so I haven’t posted much there.

        • I just use the sub Reddit movies that the share option brings up, that’s as much as I’ve delved in! Seems to be working though! 🙂

  43. Hey Tyson,
Submitted your Drive Review to Reddit under the ‘Movies’ sub.

Lemme know how it does. AWESOME Idea by the way.

  44. Okay Tyson, with your help, I think I got this figured out. I went with a past review of yours, Eden Lake, and put it on StumbleUpon; it looks like a did everything correctly. And I brought up my buttons (I hope that’s not a derogatory term somewhere!) on my page for ‘The Creeping Terror’.

And by doing this, actual cash money begins to appear in my mailbox, right?

And yes, if done correctly lots of money should appear. Cheques signed by Tyson carter, who is a real person 😉

  45. Lemme see…Facebook friend request sent – check. Facebook page liked – check. The Face Off – Drive post shared on Twitter, which also automatically posts on Facebook – check. (I chose that one because I love the Face Off concept and was thinking of stealing…I mean, adapting the idea to books on my blog).

    • Cheers Mark!

Im a beginner on Reddit too! All I do is hit the share button, then sign in. Never used an email over there, just the same name, and it does the link and title for you. I add the category movies and post. On the right of the link it takes you to has a number of people browsing movies section over there when you post, so more people is more chance of someone reading I guess.!! It’s free and only takes a few seconds so I figure its worth trying looking at the numbers it has brought in for people. Feel free to try putting one of my links on there, and ill do one if yours and you can let me know how many views you get from it! 🙂

  47. Personally I removed the share buttons on my blog and asking around no one seemed to really use them. Which is a shame of course, but looking at my own behaviour, I also never click on them. Maybe people aren’t as willing to share a lot they read as everyone hope they would.

    • Thats kind of why I started this, because I felt they were an under used tool, and just wanted to see if they make a difference. From what Ive seen, views wise it does. It just takes a few of us to take that extra few seconds and click the button, and it can really make a difference to everyones views. For a few seconds work, has to be worth a try and the results make it worth it :
