Call To Arms: The Results Show

We-Speak-Social-Media

Around 10 days or so ago, I wrote a pleading/begging/grovelling/whatever you want to call it post about trying to bring bloggers together. More specifically, trying to get us to work with each other and share our hard-earned posts to a potentially wider audience. Just to wrap up this little series, I’m going to share my findings and see how we can continue this long-term, in the hope of us all benefiting from it.

The response to the previous two parts of this Call To Arms has been amazing, and if you missed them they can be found here:

Call To Arms

Call To Arms: Part 2

I won’t then retread old ground, and I hope anyone reading this will by now know what I’m actually going on about. I have had a lot of fun talking about all this, and so many people have sent kind messages and supported me with it. As much as I have taken some stick for going on about this ‘sharing is caring‘ message (all from a loving place I hope!!), it really has been great to see people not only on my site trying to share, but also on other people’s sites I have seen fellow bloggers talking about it. Even when they were saying ‘I’ve seen Tyson banging on about this sharing thing so I’ve shared your stuff‘ that can only be a positive thing, and it’s great to see our little community pulling in the same direction.

Long term, I’m sure you will pleased to know I’m not going to keep posting about this and begging people to share. I just wanted to do my bit and raise some awareness, and if it gets just 1 person working with me and sharing my work and me sharing theirs, it’s all been worth it. I have had mixed results in terms of improvements in visitors, both in my results and some of you who have told me what happened with your site. For 4 days in a row after I made the initial post, I had my best ever days views wise, and that is no coincidence. Thank you to anyone who shared my work, and I know me sharing yours worked for some of you. Apologies to those it didn’t, but I will keep on trying!

Results wise, I have to say Reddit has been the best for bringing in views. Not just for my site, I know others have had great success putting your posts on there. It seems such a strange site though (I know one person has been banned already LOL) and it’s probably in your own best interest to share your own work on there and mix it up with other site links, just to avoid being classed as a spammer. Worth it when you can get your links on, but a little hit and miss.

StumbleUpon again was good, but not really setting the world alight. I would get around 10-15 views per link, so again it is something I will keep using. If you want to leave your StumbleUpon ID in the comments, I will add you (hopefully others will too) and we can see if we can make a difference that way.

So how do I want this to continue in a way where I’m not constantly asking people to share? Two ways really. First of all, if you are friends with me on Facebook, and have liked my site page there, I am going to try and share as many of your reviews as I can over there. So if I see you post a review on Facebook, I’ll hit the share button and share it with my friends/likers. I hope that if I do this to you, you will maybe want to return the favour. It’s a really easy way to see who is sharing your work (since it tells us!) and I figure it’s a simple, quick and easy way to spread our work round.

Like Head In A Vice’s Facebook page

Secondly, Twitter is a great way to share our work. I know some people do this already, and it is so easy clicking that button below our posts and it does all the work for you! I want to use this more, but in trying to extend it I have created a list on Twitter. The link is below, and if you want to join it, please just head on over. Once there you can see the other members of the list (if there are any!) and then get re-tweeting! As with Facebook, this will notify the person whose work you shared, and then the aim is they will then return the favour. It is purely a re-tweet list. It takes no time at all really to look at the other members in the list, and work down and re-tweet a few of them. This is very much an experimental thing, and if you can’t just join the list, please let me know and I’ll send an invite. I think that’s maybe how it has to work, and I try and invite people to the group. Apologies in advance if you start getting invites! I want this one to be useful but purely about sharing, and for the sake of a seconds work to re-tweet someone else’s work to all your followers, could really benefit us all. If one person joins, well hey, at least we can count on each other sharing! Plus, you might make some new twitter buddies and meet more movie lovers!!

Click and join >>>>>>     Twitter List – Call To Arms

Well, that about does it for the Call To Arms series. Thank you all for reading and joining in, and I really hope this movement doesn’t stop now. Facebook & Twitter links above just need you to join in and we can keep this going, and I’m still going to try and post as many of your things on Reddit & StumbleUpon just so it keeps me off the spamming list! Thanks again for reading and making this worthwhile, and don’t forget to keep on sharing! 😛

  2. I work in the web business, design huge corporate websites, SEO etc…and I still can’t figure out what in the world Redit is. The first day I posted something there I got a few responses but since then nothing. 0 views from my posts. Plus it’s as ugly as ass to use. StumbleUpon is nice to use but not much response.

I will persevere with it, I even tried your comic in the movies and comic section on there, Im guessing it brought in nothing. Shame………onwards and upwards!! 🙂

  3. I posted my Drown Your Fears article to reddit a couple of weeks ago and got over 4500 views from reddit alone. It’s not the first time I’ve pulled in thousands from reddit either. The trick to reddit is that it’s gotta be something genuinely interesting. Like pictures or videos that haven’t exactly gotten popular on the internet just yet. You never really know what’s going to be a hit though, so it’s always worth trying!

Thats awesome man, what sub reddit are you posting that in, and what title if you dont mind me asking? I just cant fathom out what makes some articles so popular to click and others not so much. Good to know it works for some people anyway! 😛

      • I usually post it in HORROR. And the thing is, if someone sees, “The Thing Review!” or “SCARY AS SHIT PENNYWISE DROWNING VIDEO” they are always going to click that one instead. It’s just how Reddit works. It’s definitely much tougher for a review to get hits on there.

  7. I posted a link to my last review on Reddit and did get a spike in hits, not hundreds though. Guess that’s a risk when you write long and rambling reviews of the obscure/films no one really cared about in the first place! But I have a account now so I’m happy to share other’s reviews (interspersed with funny cats videos and the like so I don’t get banned for spamming!). Like others I find the layout of Reddit a bit baffling and badly designed though. Glad you’ve had some good results with it, and I will defo join your Twitter thing, if that’s OK! 🙂

Digg has brought me absolutely nothing, so I have no advice to give on that one! Reddit, well, just by some of the comments on here it brings in thousands of views for some people and zero for others. Its free to try though, so maybe try posting one of your links on there. All you need is a username and password and post it up! I hope you have better luck than some of us have had with it! 🙂

Well – I’ve tried to do my best to Stumble Upon your stuff – but – it’s been hit or miss. I hate these things that if I “SU” two of you in one day I am forbidden to do any more until I do 100 “random stumbles” which is a HUGE pain in the ass. So I do: you – me – chris – erin – someone – OH can I do me again? BLOCKED! Reddit is stupid but one day I did get almost 1500 hits on Tucker and Dale VS Evil. Everything else I’ve ever put out there = 1 hit so I was flagged as spam. WTF? I didn’t do anything. Oh well – I’ll keep trying but more often than not it’s a pain in the ass.

Didn’t know that about Stumble, I tend to just do 1 post a day on my site so thats all I try and put out there, but a pain in the ass for those people that do 4 or 5 posts or whatever. I will also keep stumbling and sharing your work, except REC 3 obviously 😉

And thanks for this – I was wondering why there was a decline in my stats. In a way, I almost like it because it means the numbers are a more accurate reflection of what my actual readership is — but at the same time, with google traffic, it meant certain thresholds were met – I imagine people wanting to use the Amazon Affiliates service are gonna have to readdress their eligibility.

Yeah I only found out about the google images by accident, and it definitely affects some people more than others (the first post in this little series has the comments about this more). As you say it shows a more accurate representation of your true readership, and thats really why I’m trying to do more sharing via other methods to try bring in more genuine readers, rather than just an image viewer. Cheers Dave 🙂

  16. Nice experiment! I did share a few of your posts on Reddit and StumbleUpon but not sure if it made a diff. It doesn’t show on my end…but I do know there was traffic because I had a few points here and there. But I did post up my Zombieland and City of Ember review and they did really well. 200 views or so on the first day I think, then I slows down. You know, try and just jump on the subreddit that you post in and check out whats up there. I commented on this article on Saoirse Ronan appearing in some new movies in 2013 or whatnot then posted up the City of Ember and I’m not sure if there’s a connection but still…it did awesome..maybe there’s a connection?
I will help with Twitter but I’m not on there often. Since I need to be around a computer to do that, as I still own one of those “fantastic” dumbphones..haha!

I am pleased to hear of your success with it though and I am trying to do as you suggested with the sharing, unfortunately I am guilty of being a bit lax with my other post’s viewing. Going from over 1500 views for one review to nil for all the others is odd to say the least and not a bit frustrating.

Yet I know several sites that do games reviews, et al and they do multiple uploads to reddit. A bit confusing and not a little frustrating. :-/

  21. The key to Reddit is to become active in their community. Post comments, upvote stuff you like, maintain a long-term account, etc. Rather than submit a bunch of stuff at once, it’s best to space them out. It also helps to send in unique content — it’s usually going to be pretty difficult for a normal movie review to get a lot of traffic from there (unless you really deliver an eye-catching headline).

One thing I have noticed is that it really helps to find a niche subreddit to target. I haven’t found much success with the main r/movies section, but I can get decent traffic from other smaller areas. I would recommend just exploring the website and finding some smaller communities that are an even better fit for what you’re trying to post. But make sure they’re active, too. 😀

I’ve found Reddit hit and miss but I got some good hits for my Evil Dead write up and I know Margaret on Cinematic Corner got over 400,000 hits in one day for a piece she did, which is truly insane! You definitely need to post stuff on there that is different from the usual film reviews and also a catchy headline is hugely important.
