Desert Island Films: Marcel’s Movie Reviews

desert islandMarcel from Marcel’s Movie Reviews has kindly submitted his Desert Island Films. Read on for his choices and reasons, and be sure to check out his site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods is one of those movies that I can watch over and over again. I would bring this film to the island because it sums up every other horror film ever made. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard create this perfect stereotypical formula that will allow me to remember how every other horror film ends, allowing me to not bring any other horror film to the island.

Drive

Since we’re only allowed to bring eight films, a book, and a novelty, my source of music will come from Drive. Drive has one of the most unforgettable soundtracks, and after I saw the film I found myself on iTunes buying it. The soundtrack isn’t the only good thing about this film, its minimal source of action and intensity can be felt on every viewing. Plus, Ryan Gosling playing a man with no name persona fits the film perfectly.

Kung Fu Panda

When being stuck on an island it’s necessary to include an animated film. Kung Fu Panda is the movie I would bring to the island because of how much it makes me laugh. I first saw this movie on IMAX with my uncle because he wanted to see it, personally I’m not big on animated features, but I fell in love with this film instantly.

Like Crazy

like_crazy

This is an independent film that won my heart, not for its love story but by the reality it stands by. Like Crazy is a film I would bring to the island as a reminder of the hardships relationships bring about. I would like to keep a constant reminder of how it feels to be in love while also realizing the separation of love I’m withholding on the island.

Grandma’s Boy

The comedy that I would bring to the island is Grandma’s Boy. I’ve always been one to play video games and this film sums up the comedic outlook of it. Being on an island this film would remind me of the video games I used to play and how playing with friends creates a competitive relationship that is serious but also funny.

Magnolia

The reason I’m bringing Magnolia is because it has my favorite actor’s best performance, and he’s not even the main character. Tom Cruise in Magnolia showcases, what I think is his best performance. The film itself is an emotional rollercoaster with all of the characters and provides this hidden intensity that flows naturally throughout the whole movie.

Inglourious Basterds

I B Teaser 1-Sht.

By far my favorite Tarantino film. Inglourious Basterds includes Tarantino’s creative dialogue that earned Christoph Waltz’s Oscar winning performance. I find myself constantly watching this film even at its long runtime of 2 hours and 33 minutes long. This fictitious outlook of World War 2 will remind me of the satire that Tarantino expresses in this film and why it’s my favorite Tarantino film.

Seven Samurai

Akira Kurosawa’s epic story of a village in desperate need of help, hiring seven samurai to wave off a group of bandits is my favorite film of all time. This film is also relatable to the island because I would be in desperate need of help; only thing is nobody would be around. Kurosawa captures this story flawlessly, I won’t go into how but he just does.

Book – Brave New World

This is the book that I would bring with me to the island. I’ve never read and I know nothing of it. Since I would have all the time in the world, I feel like a book that I’ve never read would be more useful because I could either love it or hate it, and if I hate it, the fire you could more of a spark.

Luxury Item – Crowbar

crowbar

I would bring a crowbar with me to the island because a crowbar is the most useful item ever! There could be so many things that a a crowbar can be used for. I could possibly climb a tree with it, crack coconuts, and possibly catch fish, who knows.
