Desert Island Films: Lasers, Monsters and Barbarians oh, my!

Desert Island Films

Mark from Lasers, Monsters and Barbarians oh, my! has kindly submitted his Desert Island Films. Read on for his choices and reasons, and be sure to check out his site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Desert Island Films: Lasers, Monsters and Barbarians oh, my!

1) Army of Darkness (theatrical version)

army of darkness

If because Bruce Campbell is in isn’t reason enough then because it’s the best whacked out selfish goof vs. the undead in a medieval setting film ever made.

2) Wizard of Oz

the wizard of oz

My favorite film of all time and has been since I was 5. It has great character, one of the best villains ever and I laugh at the statue joke at the beginning every time.

3) The Invisible Man

the invisible man

If I start to feel sad at being on the island I’d watch this and say “at least I’m not like that nut job that Claude Rains is playing”.

4) Rear Window

rear window

I think the combination of suspense and observing a lot of everyday life (in between the murder stuff) would really keep my attention in this situation.

5) Breaking Away

breaking away

As a coming of age film it’s great. It’s also a great film because of the fantastic bicycle scenes and a dude fighting with a bowling ball on his hand.

6) Star Trek 2

Star Trek 2

Kirk and Khan in one of the greatest battles ever caught on film. Khaaaaaaaaaaaan!

7) Danger Diabolik

Danger Diabolik

I could have gone logical and picked a Bond film here. Then again I’m on a deserted island yet I have power to watch movies. So logic goes out the window and I’ll pick this wonderfully bizarre film.

8) Way out West

way out west

Just simply it’s the two funniest people who ever lived at their best.

Book – Dinosaur Society Dinosaur Encyclopedia.

dinosaurIn this situation this is the right book because I can just jump in whenever and wherever in the book and still find something interesting to read about.

Luxury item – Tennis ball. I like activity and I can throw and catch it for that. To relieve tension I’d squeeze it for relief. Ahhhhh.

I can’t find fault with any of your choices, especially Laurel and Hardy. Great stuff.

      • This is in my draft for my own Desert Island Movies, and I showed the movie to my fiance over the summer. She thought it was the most boring thing ever and I almost left her over it. The Simpsons did a great send-up on Rear Window once where Bart thinks Flanders killed his wife… gotta be close to 15 years ago now. Jesus I feel so old right now.

Some very interesting choices here. I’ve always loved “The Invisible Man” even with the ultimate price he pays.
