Desert Island Films: My Filmviews

Desert Island Films

Today’s castaway is Nostra, who runs the site My Filmviews. Nostra lives in the Netherlands and has been writing about movies for several years. He watches movies in almost any genre, except horror. Luckily, despite not watching my favourite style of movie, he still reads my site and has decided to share with us all his Desert Island Films. So please read on for his choices and reasons, then be sure to check out his great site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Black Swan

Black Swan Poster

A perfect portrait on how passion can drive someone to madness and a good reminder to not go mad on the island by just focussing on getting away from it. It’s a movie which always manages to move me.

Mr.Nobody

mr nobody

Its director hadn’t made a movie for over 10 years and then came with this masterpiece. For those who don’t know it, it’s about the impact small decisions can have on the rest of our lives and it explores those choices. A subject which has always fascinated me and here it has been captured perfectly.

Pulp Fiction

pulp fiction

Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece, which offers the perfect blend of violence and humour. Also a very quotable movie.

Groundhog Day

groundhog day

This is all about being stuck in time, which isn’t much different from living on a desert island where each day seems the same. Despite this being a comedy it can make you think about life.

Coming to America

coming to america

A comedy I always watch if I come across it on TV. I don’t even know how many times I’ve seen it, but it just never bores me.

Intouchables

intouchbles movie poster

Since I might be down because I am on a desert island I will need a feel good movie and this is the perfect one. Great performances and a lot of laughs.

Falling Down

falling down

Frustration will also be a part of having to survive on an island, so this movie has got me covered on that. Michael Douglas goes crazy in a way we might sometimes think about ourselves, but never do. Despite the dark theme it’s a very funny movie as well.

The Raid

The Raid

It was ages ago since I sweared when watching an action movie, but this one managed it. The action is so awesome that it will entertain me on several rewatches. It doesn’t matter that the story is one which could be described as a videogame. Cool fights is what it’s all about.

Book:

Book about film theory – I don’t read many books, but if I have to take one I would probably take one about film theory. Not because I want to start making movies, but just to get a better understanding of the techniques which are used. I would be able to read it and rewatch all the movies I’ve taken to analyse them in detail.

Novelty item:

MP3 Player – You can’t live your life without music, so I would take one with me. I wouldn’t care if there’s elevator music on it.

  1. Thanks again for joining in Nostra. Great choices my friend, especially love the Mr Nobody pick. Such a superb movie, and hardly anyone has seen it. Obviously, Jared Leto is magnificent as always 🙂

You can’t go wrong with Intouchables if you want a feel good movie and I like the idea of watching Groundhog Day over and over again. Nice list.

Good choices here-I had not heard of Mr. Nobody, so read brief synopsis elsewhere, and now I gotta see this! Sounds like a giant version of Run Lola Run, which I loved. This is why I surf review blogs, to hear about movies I haven’t seen yet.

    • I’m already happy that there is one person who has never heard of Mr.Nobody and will now be checking it out. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do Ryan. I also really enjoyed Run Lola Run and you can kind of compare them although this one is more mixed up.

  5. Cool list! It’s sad that I still need to see Mr. Nobody and The Intouchables. Both are on my ever-growing list, and seeing them here just reinforces the fact that I need to check them out.

  6. Mr Nobody is an absolute freaking masterpiece – and a film which, until quite recently – I’d never heard of. It is a beautiful, life-changing film which deserves far more attention than it received upon it’s initial release. Great choice! 🙂

  17. “Groundhog Day” is a great one since you will be reliving the same day over and over again, but without the added annoyance of waking-up to Sonny & Cher.

Love that you also have “Coming to America”.
