WordPress is still not fixed for a lot of us here in the UK. No end is in sight, and they have no idea when it will all be sorted. However, I have been able to post on your sites and comment here, so things are slowly getting back to normal. I am still going into spam on some of your sites, but that aside things are becoming more manageable. Thank you to everyone that said nice things on my issues post last week. I just couldn’t get on to reply, but now I can and want to get some regular posts back, like I used to have. So that leads me on to this weeks Question Time.
I’m guessing if you read my site, you like movies. You will have seen hundreds if not thousands of them, and maybe even boast an awesome collection. I know there are people out there that document EVERY film they have ever watched. That’s insane, and I’m so jealous I haven’t done it. What I have done recently is start to keep a list of all the films I’ve watched this year. I always see people write a yearly best films list, and I never do it because I worry I’d miss something off. Not any more. I recently created a list over on IMDB and it’s a great way of seeing what I have actually seen. What better way than by using the worlds biggest movie website. I just find the film, add it to my list, and it can be ordered alphabetically, by your rating, or however you like.
It got me thinking, do any of you keep a track on what you watch? Maybe your blog is how you do it. Do you review every film you see? I don’t (or review anything as it looks recently!) and I do watch a lot more than I review. I’m sure there are countless ways of keeping track of what we watch if you are so inclined, and I’d love to know what you do. And if you don’t bother, would it be something you’d be interested in, or is it just too much work?
I hope that when I look back at my list at the end of the year, there will be films I had forgotten about and I won’t miss any highlights if I make an annual Top 10 for example. Here is my list so far, if anyone is interested, and yes, it does include some TV shows I’ve seen. Although I’m sure I’ve forgotten some, I only started this a few weeks ago but the idea is there, and next year I’ll be prepared and ready to start it straight away.

/ August 8, 2013Yes, I keep track of everything I watch, as far back as the 1970s, but only what I see at the cinema: movie, date, time, cost, theater, city, and who I went with. At home, I try to take notes on and review everything I watch, but sometimes if the movie just isn’t interesting enough to me, or I have nothing to say about it, I won’t review it. And sometimes I just want to relax with a film, and not worry about taking notes…although I recently bought a digital voice recorder, so now I can enjoy a film without having to pause it every ten seconds to jot something down with pencil and paper!

I barely manage to review anything these days, but when I do I want them to be in-keeping (as you know) with my theme around here. So there are lots of films I watch that are just for fun, and I dont have to review. I dont know how people manage to review EVERY film that is released in that year. Mental. 🙂

/ August 9, 2013Back when I kept the stubs I was in college and the theaters around there were around $4 for a movie, so it wasn’t too bad. This past year I had a special card that I paid $25 a month for and could see unlimited movies. Unfortunately that recently expired so now I don’t see as many. I keep track on an Excel spreadsheet, the name, date, how I saw it (theater, dvd, tv channel) and whether I have seen it before. Pretty easy to maintain, I just update it whenever I see something.

WordPress tried blaming our ISP’s, but its something to do with WordPress being marked as a bad site, or something, so a lot of the ISP’s blocked access to it, and they are trying to work on a fix. They aren’t very good at updating us though……….This week, touch wood, mine is working fine, but a lot of people still have no access at all. Very frustrating.

I have a listography.com account where I make lists about everything — my collections, my movie-watching, wish lists, college courses I’ve taken, states I’ve visited, nicknames for my dog. You name it, I’ve probably got a list for it! I started tracking my viewing habits in 2010 out of curiosity and have just stuck with it since then. I start a new list each year. I include rewatches in the list — I tracked them the first year because I wanted to estimate my total number of hours spent watching movies when the list was complete. So I continue to include them, partially for the sake of tradition and partially because I still have that same curiosity regarding the number of hours I devote to movies each year. I mark “new to me” films in bold so I can also see my rewatch-to-discovery ratio, and I include release years in the list so I can see how many films I watched from each decade or year as well as the classic-to-modern viewing ratio. In other words, I’m a huge nerd, haha.

/ August 8, 2013This year is the first year I’ve tracked everything I watched in 2013. Last year was just the movies I saw in theatres and some marathons. I usually can remember which movies I’ve seen and if I don’t remember, well, first moments of the rewatch usually will remind me of it and its probably average and I’ll turn it off..haha! Other than that, I track the movies I own because I have a good 30 that I haven’t seen and they have their own special pile which I change around once in a while since my boyfriend just picks off the first one and we might end up with 5 dramas in a row and that makes for a pretty depressing week..haha! Point is, I track my movies with my blog now and my very forgetful brain. 😉

I also have a spreadsheet with all the movies I’ve been to at the cinema (as well as a fair few videos I rented, though that’s a lot patchier) going back to 1996, date/place/film/director/who I went with.

I haven’t kept track at all this year, which disappoints me, but I haven’t seen nearly as many as I did in 2012. I not only have not kept track of all of the movies we’ve seen, we don’t even keep track of the ones we own. I haven’t even managed to keep them in any kind of order, which is how come we have duplicates and triplicates of some. Garry remembers who starred in and directed every movie made from about 1920 up through the 1970s, but neither of us can find the DVD we want to watch. Oh well.

I didn’t for the first two years, and last year it became obvious how difficult it was to remember a full year’s worth of movies (the first “year” was only three months). So now I keep track of every movie and short film I watch in a text file on my computer.
I also track them on Letterboxd.com. Last year, starting about mid-July, I started going through IMDb year by year, marking and rating all movies I could remember seeing (and could remember enough to rate). (Yes, this was tedious). Finished late December. A few other bloggers suggested Letterboxd to me, so I imported my IMDb list into there (it was still in beta then, so it didn’t have the “Pro” restriction it does now). So I’ve got my list here, my list at IMDb, and my list at Letterboxd. Redundant, but at least it’s easy to ensure I don’t lose anything.

Letterboxd is really coming highly recommended, I need to look into it. Although if it costs I’ll keep on IMDB, as Im cheap! Sounds like you have it all covered, lists in a few places so you’re all set for your end of year awards!

/ August 9, 2013The basic Letterboxd service doesn’t cost anything. “Pro” costs money, and allows you to do a direct import from an IMDb output file. It also allows you to make lists of more than 20 items (basic is limited to 20). Your diary and your collection of watched movies are unlimited, though.
I was in the public beta, and they had the Pro features available to everyone at that time, so I used the import function get most of my viewed films in. Also got grandfathered in for the over-20 lists (at least on the lists I already had created; not sure how it would work with a new list.)

You can have as many lists as you want. The lists are limited in size to 20 items if you don’t use Pro and/or were grandfathered in as a beta user. Your diary (record of what movies you’ve watched this year) is unlimited. Your collection of watched movies is unlimited.

/ August 9, 2013I never used to keep track of what I watched, beyond a database of my DVDs where I marked which ones I’d seen or not. Then I started my blog, and as it’s all about the (new) stuff I’ve seen each year, I guess that started doing it for me.
Then I started a second blog, where I basically just catalogue everything I watch, read, listen to, etc. So for the past five or so years, I not only know what I’ve watched/read/listened to/etc, but I know how many times (usually just once!) and on what day. Which isn’t anal at all.
And after I got Blu-ray I started using Blu-ray.com to keep track of my BD collection, so whenever I watch one of those for the first time I mark it off there.
And then I found iCheckMovies, which I think is pretty good, and I see others have mentioned above. I got into it when it was all free and never intended to go for a paid option, but I ended up getting the cheapo subscription (something like $1 a month, I think it is) because it added some features I wanted/missed and I was quite invested in the concept by then. As I can’t remember what those features were, I should probably consider if I still ‘need’ them!
And then, just recently, I kept seeing people on Twitter using Letterboxd, so I’ve gone and signed up for that too. I like iCheckMovies for keeping quick tabs on how I might be doing completing lists (like the IMDb Top 250, Sight & Sound’s, Oscar winners, mainly IMDb genres, it goes on (and on and on)), but Letterboxd is more social media-y, seeing what online chums have watched/rated/etc. And the side of me that created that blog way back in my second paragraph likes that you can date when you watched the films and mark if that’s your first viewing or not.
And whenever I watch something I make sure to rate it on IMDb, and on LOVEFiLM.
Yep, whenever I watch something new it basically turns into a half-hour of adding it to lists, blogs, and ticking boxes all over the web. Slippery slope, this cataloguing malarky…

/ August 9, 2013When I was younger I used to glue all my movie stubs into my journal of course now I don’t have a journal or vast quantities of “scrapbooking” time. I review everything new that I watch, according to the current rules of my movie feature, however after recent voting I am intending to change the rules to include rewatches that I have not already reviewed.
I kind of wish I did have a definitive list…

Well, I suppose I’ve kept track for movies that released in a given year, which I used to help me compile my end of year lists, but last year I started keeping track of every movie I see, for no real particular reason. Just a fan of pointless lists for my own personal use is all, I suppose. 😛

/ August 9, 2013I find it hard to keep track of everything I’ve watched. I don’t make yearly top ten lists for the same reason as yourself. There’s just no way to compile a list that’s absolutely true to your taste. Some you may forget to mention and others you just haven’t seen yet. If I was to make a list from last year, I wouldn’t have had The Master on it as it took me so long to get around to it. As it turns out, it was my favourite of the year. I don’t buy yearly lists. They strictly come down to what you’ve seen and that isn’t accurate. You’re better making your yearly list at least two years after that year has passed. That way there’s a better chance that you’ve seen everything you wanted to see.

/ August 10, 2013Yeah I use my blog for it man. It was actually the reason I started the ‘Worth Watching’ monthly posts on my site. They capture everything I don’t have the time or inclination to write a full blown review on. I think it works well. Allows me to bash out a three sentence review for a film so I can then look back and remember how I feel about it. People are always asking me what I thought about a film, and I can’t always remember off the top of my head.

As for your question, lately I have been reviewing all the movies I see so that helps me keep up with them, but I don’t keep a running list or anything like that. Use to, but not anymore.

/ August 13, 2013I use my blog to keep track of most of the stuff I watch. I don’t actually get the time to watch a huge number of films, so I do tend to review most of what I watch. I also have a pretty terrible memory so it helps me recall what I liked and disliked about a film. I do like the idea of keeping an IMDB list though, I might start doing that. Oh and I hope WordPress sorts itself out. Think i’m alright now but it’s clearly still messing up for quite a few.

/ August 13, 2013Hi Tyson! Well, I try to review every film I watch, esp those at the theater as I go to about 1-2 press screenings a week. But as far as rental goes, it depends. I’ll only review those that I feel like doing, or would benefit my readers. Generally I keep track in my head, which isn’t the smartest thing to do as I’m very forgetful, ahah 😀

/ August 13, 2013I’ve never been one for keeping track of my movies. That is, until I came across Letterboxd. Which, as some people have already said, is really great (and simple!) for keeping a log of everything you watch. It’s actually helped my blogging, as it’s a nice little reminder of what films I’ve seen during the month (you can log the date you watched them), and everything now gets a write up at some point on my site. If it’s not a full review, it gets dropped into one (or two) of my monthly round up posts, with about 200 words or so for each film.

/ August 15, 2013I know I am super late to this. But, what the hell.
I have a google doc with all the movies I’ve ranked for my site. It lists date watched, title, the scores for the movie (Film, Movie, Acting, and Writing. Marks the bonus point(s) if applicable), then does the math and shoots an average score out. I then mark if it was the first time I’d seen it or not. This is all sortable, since it is a spreadsheet, so I can go back and do and end of year review based on what I thought of the movie when I saw it rather than what it has become in my mind (though the latter isn’t an invalid thing to discuss, of course).
It’s up near 600 titles now… so it’s become fun to sort through when I am bored at work (but only because I am a numbers dork). All the titles are also on my site, of course, but not in a way which makes it possible to sort by rankings.

/ August 18, 2013I’ve been keeping track of what I watch since probably 2001 or so. It was all IMDB but now I use my blog as well. I used to only keep a list mainly of every film I actually went to in the cinema but now I’m including everything I watch at home as well. I have a page on my blog where I’ve listed everything I’ve watched so far this year (and already ranked according to how much I liked them so my end of year post of my favorites will be a breeze). Yes, I think I’m a little sad. And anal retentive. 🙂 As for reviewing them, I’m not doing too bad but just don’t have the time to review them all. Trying to catch up on that… But I focus on reviewing the ones I see in cinema as those are the main films people seem to want to read about.

I’ve always been pretty sad on keeping lists. Before this fancy Internet thingy, I used a pen & paper. Because I’m Old School! 🙂

/ August 30, 2013I started keeping track of my movie watching in 2004 using IMDB. I just rate the movies and they will show up in my ratings list (which you can find here: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur4186270/ratings (hope it works)). Have rated over 1650 movies since then. A couple of year ago I also started using whatiwatch.net, which will allow you to see the exact movie each month and year and allows you to see all the statistics which go with it (total length of all movies watch during a period, which format etc).

/ August 30, 2013Yeah, just start rating and you don’t need to update your list as you can just see them all in your profile (of course you won’t see then which year you watched them, but I use the other site for that).
Of that number most of them I watched when I started blogging, which really pushed the amount of movies I watch every week. Just went on holiday for three weeks and didn’t watch a lot….must say I didn’t miss it though as I really enjoyed myself.
