Desert Island Films #88 – Christian Entertainment Reviews

Logan from Christian Entertainment Reviews has kindly submitted his Desert Island Films. Please read on for his choices and reasons, and be sure to check out his site.

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

1) The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight is my all-time favorite film, and for good reason. The Dark Knight’s epic “battle for Gotham’s soul” is just the kind of dark and gritty tale that Batman fans had been waiting for. It’s the only truly satisfying Batman film, which is saying something, considering there are eight of them now (including the Adam West film).

2) Wreck-It Ralph

I’m kind of like a kid that never outgrew his love for animation. I still watch animated superhero shows, still like Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I still get into “Dixar” movies. This one is the best of the Dixar films, and yes, I realize that the Toy Story films are included in that. It has some of the best character development animation has ever seen, as well as incredible interaction between Ralph and Vanellope.

3) A Walk to Remember

Who says a guy can’t like a movie about love? Whereas most “chick flicks” are shallow and feature stale stories that have been done dozens of times with only character names and faces changing, this story is about sacrificial love. It’s about loving someone even when you know you aren’t going to get much out of it. That would be a nice heart-warmer on a desert island. Until you remember that you’re all alone, but hey, movies exist for us to live vicariously, right?

4) The Avengers

Superhero movies are awesome. A movie about a team of superheroes? Phenomenal. This was quite a challenge for Joss Whedon. How do you make a film about six superheroes (well, five and a half. We all know The Black Widow doesn’t count, cool though she may be) and make it balanced? I’ll never know how, but he did it. From “We have a Hulk” to Thor’s hammer meeting Cap’s shield to the epic battle in New York, the movie is amazing.

5) October Baby

I love the positive messages that come through Christian film, but many are diluted by sub-par execution and poor acting. October Baby is not one of those. Hannah, who has numerous health challenges because she was the victim of a failed abortion attempt, goes on a very emotional journey to find her birth mother. The acting is good, the plot is excellent, and it’s emotionally turbulent in the way that a film like this should be.

6) Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (Extended Edition)

The whole trilogy is utterly fantastic, but Return of the King especially so. Aragorn’s heroic ventures and the epic battles scenes (not to mention Gandalf’s awesome beard) alone make the tale worth watching over and over again. Add to that Sam’s amazing task to rescue Frodo and help him complete his task, and the film takes on a whole new level of epic. The extended edition brings much joy to nerds like myself with a full five hours of Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien masterpiece.

7) Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

I’m a huge fan of Star Wars, including the expanded universe, but I really don’t think they ever matched the beauty of the first film. Luke’s journey to discover the brand new world of the force by the hand of Old Ben is one of the best sci-fi/fantasy films of our time, and the enormous personalities of Han Solo and Princess Leia make it truly memorable. I could do without the prequels, and I wouldn’t miss them that much. The original film, however, deserves a prominent place in every collection.

8) The Book of Eli

This post-apocalyptic tale about protecting the last remaining copy of the Bible must always be on a top movies list. Gary Oldman delivers a bone-chilling performance as the villain Carnegie and Denzel Washington is, as always, fantastic. The twist at the end thrills me every time, even though I know it’s coming.

Book

Unwind by Neal Shusterman

This is the only book that’s ever kept me up reading at 2 a.m. I had to finish it. It’s a gripping dystopian thriller about three teenagers who are faced with “unwinding” (being salvaged for body parts by their parents, because they’re troubled teens). It’s a story that ponders important questions on the value of human life while exploring the minds of deep and real characters.

Inanimate Object

Journal – I would want to bring the hugest journal that could be found. There are a lot of things I could do without, but writing is not one of them. How else am I supposed to stay sane on an island by myself?
