What I’ve Been Watching…..

did you miss me

Wow, 7 months have passed since I last posted here. As many of you will know, my beautiful daughter Ava was born on Halloween and I’ve had no time for anything really except marvelling and obsessing over her. Now she’s in a sleeping routine, she is letting me watch a few movies here and there. I worked so hard to start this blog and build up a community, and I feel very lucky to have done so. Whilst I hoped the blogging world would just stand still and mourn my absence, I am guessing it continued and thrived and I’m hopeful there is still some kind of audience I can tap into. But we shall see, so I’m here to test the waters and try to entice some people to keep checking this little place out. The caveat is that WordPress and the UK had some ISP issues, and whilst that appears to be fixed, I have lost all the sites and people I followed/was followed by, so please shout out below, drop a like or let me know if you’ve seen anything I’ve reviewed so I can find you and your site again!

My old style of reviewing will have to be revamped, and in a time-saving effort my posts will now be in a new format. I’ll be talking briefly about some movies I’ve seen and posting them all in one big post. A lot to read in one go I admit, but since I probably won’t be posting more than once a week, this way I’ll get more reviews out there, and then have more time to check out all your sites and get back in the game.

Thanks to everyone who emailed/tweeted/facebooked me whilst I was on hiatus, your messages and support was much appreciated. You know who you all are, and I’m hoping this time I’m back for good. Until baby #2. Anyway, enough rambling, and here are my thoughts on a few films I’ve seen in the past few months.

Aftershock (2012)

aftershock

Written by and starring Eli Roth of Hostel fame comes a film I had heard pretty much zero about. Most of the time I find that to be a bad sign but every now and again I get a surprise and this was definitely one of those times. A 4.9 IMDB rating and 24% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes differs massively from how much I liked Aftershock. The story is about a group of travellers in Chile who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits. They quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.

It went to places that shocked and surprised me, and not knowing much more about it definitely worked in my favour, so I’ll give you the same grace. Definitely a bit graphic for some people, but if you like a dark disaster movie, you could do a lot worse than checking this out. It even has a weird cameo from Selena Gomez, yet I still couldn’t hate it.

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)

cabin fever

When a group of friends enjoying a bachelor cruise in the Caribbean stumble upon a research facility on a remote island, a deadly virus is unleashed. The group must find a way to survive before the flesh-eating virus consumes them all.

The third in the Cabin Fever series brings us a prequel and lets us know how the shit hit the fan in the first place. Starring Sam Gamgee himself, Sean Astin is the main draw in this decent enough chapter which brings the gore and some new info on the nasty virus. The highlight would be a girl on girl fight to the death……not for the faint hearted and certainly a memorable scene. The effects here were very good, and whilst far from perfect I enjoyed this entry more than the others in the series. That’s maybe not saying too much but there is enough good stuff here to keep horror fans entertained at the very least. Even if it’s just to see some bloody and gruesome deaths.

The Human Race (2013)

the human race

This was a tough movie to write about. I’m still not even sure how I really feel about it and I watched a few weeks ago. It just seemed to me that for everything positive that I liked there was always a negative to trip it up and lower my score. The plot gives us 80 people taken from their everyday lives and thrust into a race, quite literally for their lives. People of all ages, races and abilities are here, trying to stay alive whilst figuring out who or what is doing this to them and why.

The film opens with a really cool and bold move, and that twist alone boosts its score. But then some corny dialogue and poor acting detracts from an otherwise interesting and enjoyable experience. I do recommend it, even though my score may not look that great. I just couldn’t get over some of the annoying aspects I saw, and as soon as I started to get into the mystery of it, and obviously the race, a character would open their mouth and say the most ridiculous thing and all the good work was undone.

Maybe I’m too harsh……I just feel that with a bigger budget and better script this could have been a really good time as the idea was original to say the least. The ending was suitably ambiguous but gave me enough, so that’s a definite positive, yet overall I just found too many negative points that kept grating on me during and even after it all finished.

I Spit On Your Grave (2010)/I Spit On Your Grave 2 (2013)

i spit on your gravei spit on your grave 2

They are both basically the same movie, so this is a 2-in-1 for you. I’d guess most people have heard of the infamous 1978 version of this film, and how it was banned because of the rape and torture etc. Well, compared to the newest instalments, in the same way the original Evil Dead movies look tame in comparison to the remake, these modern-day Steven R. Monroe directed versions are certainly more shocking and extreme. To say I liked them makes me sound strange, and they aren’t something I’d happily re-watch, but taken in the context of what they are, they actually aren’t bad movies.

Of course, most people will be put off by the horribly realistic humiliation and torture/rape that goes on, but if you can look past that (I know, but bear with me) we get some straight up hardcore revenge movies. Credit where it’s due, no watered down Liam Neeson style revenge action here. Both these films are about one womans journey from being a victim to getting her revenge. Like a cheaper, fucked up Kill Bill imitation with less swords & added rape by dodgy male actors. You’re either interested in this kind of film or you’re not. A little like The Human Centipede or A Serbian Film. Some will watch to see what all the fuss is about, whilst the majority will avoid it. I kind of enjoyed them in the same way I liked Irréversible or those I mentioned in the line above. Plus, part 3 is on its way next year.

The Jungle (2013)

the jungle

Directed by Andrew Traucki, who gave the world Black Water & The Reef (which I loved and previously reviewed HERE), The Jungle follows a team of conservationists who set out to explore the dense Indonesian rainforest in search of the legendary javan leopard. But the deeper into the jungle they journey, the more nervous the group’s native guides become – local legend has it that a deadly werewolf-like creature roams the dense jungle. Whilst the found-footage genre is definitely wearing thin, sometimes there’s a valid reason why these characters in movies film themselves and luckily in The Jungle it works well.

Obviously if I tell you what they find, there would be no point watching it. I will say I’m glad I watched it, and whilst not as nerve-wracking as being hunted by a great white shark like in The Reef, there were a few scary moments hidden in The Jungle. Creepy atmosphere, great build up just maybe let down by the pay off. It’s definitely not a typical paint by numbers Hollywood style movie where everyone lives and all the questions are answered and spoon fed to the viewer. Lots to think about after the credits roll on this one……….

Oldboy (2013)

oldboy

When checking up on my A-Z I couldn’t believe I hadn’t reviewed the original Korean masterpiece. That’s a bona-fide 10/10 for me, just an incredible piece of cinema. Like any fan of that movie, the remake wasn’t exactly something I was looking forward to. Despite a stellar cast including Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharlto Copley and a personal favourite of mine (Sopranos #1 fan here) Michael Imperioli, the remake just feels so unnecessary and pointless.

For those that don’t know, the plot of this American remake version of Oldboy is as follows: Obsessed with vengeance, a man sets out to find out why he was kidnapped and locked into solitary confinement for 20 years without reason.

Is it a good movie? I mean, yes and no. Obviously it’s not a patch on the original, but then again the story is pretty much identical aside from minor changes (years imprisoned for example) so parts of it are still good. The famous one shot fight scene from the original is repeated by director Spike Lee, albeit with one cut in it and it just fails in comparison. Props to Brolin who gives his all, but for a man locked up for 20 years he doesn’t look a day older. Just seemed a little lazy in the make up department.

I guess it’s a lose-lose situation as a fan of the original. If the remake does what it does here and repeats everything pretty much shot for shot then it looks boring and pointless. If they detour away and do something totally different you can alienate the fans who would go mad you changed something so sacred. I’m sure there’s a way, not all US remakes can be terrible can they? Maybe the planned remake of The Raid will surprise us, but I won’t hold my breath. I’d be intrigued to hear if any of you have seen this and not seen the original, maybe you took more away from this than I did. Once you know the twist the movie can never have the same impact again, so going in fresh with no idea, perhaps this remake would work on a first time viewing.

Wolf Creek 2

wolf creek 2

In a rare move, I actually enjoyed this movie more than the original (which I reviewed HERE). I’m always dubious of sequels, and when I read that Wolf Creek 2 was all about our bad guy Mick (the amazing John Jarrett) chasing and hunting people through the Australian outback, I worried that all I loved about the first film such as the intimate setting, worrying about people trying to escape, the suspense etc would be replaced by a serial killer out in the open and on a rampage. That’s something that shouldn’t work…….but boy does it work and then some. Credit to Greg Mclean, who returns to write and direct this sequel, for giving us something bigger, badder and better.

Maybe the best thing Wolf Creek 2 has going for it is the interaction between the two leads. John Jarret has created one of the best (and most fun) serial killers on the big screen, and facing off against him is a young man named Ryan Corr who is excellent here, and nothing like your usual victim. Of course there are some unbelievable moments, and maybe one or two of your usual horror clichés, but nothing that detracts from the overall film.

It’s one of the most randomly bat-shit crazy movies I’ve ever seen, and I mean that in a really good way on this occasion. For example, one moment we are treated to something which reminded me of The Hitcher, then there is a messed up Kangaroo windscreen accident, and of course where would a Wolf Creek movie be without some violence and torture. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Mick is back, and I would be there day one to see a Wolf Creek 3.

Would You Rather (2012)

would you rather

Eurgh. When the best actress on show is a former porn star (Sasha Grey) that should tell you all you need to know. Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman unknowingly agrees to compete in a deadly game of “Would You Rather” hosted by a sadistic aristocrat. Sounded quite cool from the synopsis, but I was bored all the way through, and there was literally nothing to redeem it. I always try to find a positive in any film, after all these people have got something made and released which is more than most of us will ever do, yet I’m really struggling here.

Literally the plot is the best thing about it, although even that sounds like a SAW knock-off. On rare occasions, you have to call a spade a spade and say you flat-out just didn’t like a movie. Just wasn’t my cup of tea, and if you have seen it and enjoyed it, I’d love to know why! Yet it has a higher IMDB rating than Aftershock. Wow.

Ryan, I agree. I hated Wolf Creek. Eric Isaacs blasted the sequel and from what he described it sounded pretty bad. I’m a little surprised Tyson gave it an 8.

Once I reboot my blog, the 4 of us should pick a horror movie and each of us write a mini-review of said horror film and combine reviews into one entry. Maybe we could do it monthly. Our segment could be called something like “The 4 HorrorsMen” or something. Just an idea. Could be fun.

I think with the passion for horror movies the 4 of us have, and all of our different tastes combined with the fact we all like to watch a lot of more obscure titles that slip past most of mainstream America, we could offer insight on a lot of little horror films and help promote lesser-known films that people may not otherwise hear of. 🙂

I deleted my blog a while ago. I just got tired of hearing way too much about the mainstream new releases currently hitting the theaters, while low-budget gems go practically unnoticed; of course I don’t mind hearing about new releases at times, but people seem to only want to discuss new releases, and that’d be cool if the new releases were fresh and intriguing, but that’s rarely the case.

I also cannot find a wordpress theme that I like, not any of the free or premium ones. I also wanted to reboot my blog, since no one hardly even got the “With A Friend Like Harry” reference and I think people thought the picture of Harry was me. lol. I need to rename it, etc. I could hardly get people to take me up on my recommendations and after a while it just felt like I was fighting a losing battle. My objective to start a blog was to trade recommendations with like-minded movie fans who wanted to discuss film. Kind of like a book club. 🙂

        • I didnt miss my inbox flooded with 50 reviews of the newest superhero movie to be honest…….hence why the majority of sites I DID (fucking wordpress) follow were less mainstream review stuff. Otherwise how would we find other hidden gems if all we did was mainstream chat. I love finding niche/obscure movies as you know, and sometimes big horror releases over here in europe and in Australia in particular get no attention in the States, hence why I had to come back and spread the word 😉

This is a new theme for me, just a little variation on what I had and its the best one ive come across. Im tempted to go to .org as they have more choice and better widgets, but im broke so will keep it here for free.

If you start another site up, or wanna join up on something/anything, you know I never say no. Missed talking to you buddy 🙂

Yeah, missed talking with you, as well. You, EI and Ryan are definitely the sites I keep up with most frequently for all the reasons you just stated.

Franz Patrick’s blog is another great blog as he specializes in a lot of lower-budget and foreign films, but where you and I specialize in horror and thrillers, he covers all genres. I guess he’s more well-rounded. lol.

*Also, Mark Hobin has a great blog, too, and he does cover mostly new releases, but since he’s in the Los Angeles area he covers a lot of limited-release films as well as the big mainstream ones; he also goes into a lot of depth in usually only 3 moderate paragraphs.

These are the blogs I frequent the most. Also, b/c you guys avoid spoilers in your reviews or at least offer a Spoiler label atop of the spoilers, it’s better for me. I can’t trust many bloggers to keep details sparse. They tend to reveal a little too much.

And yes, I am tired of superhero films, as well. I did go see Captain America b/c Isaacs recommended it and I know he doesn’t care for cliche mainstream stuff, either. It was actually pretty good. I mean some of the superhero films are good, but too many of them feel formulated and like you said in an entry feel “painted by numbers”. Christopher Nolan set the bar for super-hero films and Hollywood needs to pay attention. Bring the grit. Tone down the cute.

        • Yeah I followed those guys for a long time, all great writers. Spoilers are a dangerous beast. It’s hard sometimes to hook people into watching something without giving anything away. Especially with trailers ruining most films now anyway. Hidden Face is a perfect example of that.

Heard nothing but praise for that Captain America, maybe when its on tv in a few years ill give it a watch. Weirdly curious about this new batman v superman though, not sure why. Man of Steel was good but then it went mental and turned into a Michael Bay movie.

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts on both Aftershock and Wolf Creek 2. It did seem like Aftershock didn’t garner much press, but it was a unique mash-up of disaster movie and horror movie. Love that last shot. I enjoyed Wolf Creek 2, as well. It’s a good film, I think after reading reviews after watching it people dismissed it as they hate Eli Roth. I thought he did a good job as a lead actor, and when a film can shock and surprise, its normally ok in my book.

New format is easier in some ways, but still takes ages even though I try not to ramble! Want to just keep talking about some films and barely scratched the surface on others, but I figure any questions or more detail I can answer in comments 🙂

I am definitely going to try to check out The Jungle and Aftershock; both sound promising.

Good to see you back. You got Ava quoting De Niro, yet?

          Yes, exactly!

The home invasion one you hated was “Home Sweet Home” and in my review I did point out that the main girl did some stupid stuff, dumb enough to make you want to throw a glass at your TV screen, but the ending was very well directed and choreographed; it completely caught me off-guard. Just as I thought the finale was over.

I think I told you but the other recommendation I have for you is another spanish thriller called “Sleep Tight”. It’s not as good as The Hidden Face, but it’s still very good in it’s own right. I am confident it’s one you will thoroughly enjoy as the writing and acting is strong, etc. where as “Home Sweet Home” was one I had a lot of criticism for, but the ending caught me off guard and so I was hoping other horror hounds like you and EI may also enjoy it. HSM was a risky recommendation, but Sleep Tight is a pretty safe bet. EI watched it and liked it a lot. 🙂

        • Ah yeah thats it. It wanst awful, bits were good but yeah some bits were just crazy and I guessed the twist which never helps.

I will 100% get Sleep Tight watched. I have a copy ready to go, along with about 100 other films I’m slowly working through. Hopefully some of them will be recommendable. But if Eric liked it, after Wolf Creek 2 fiasco and all the others that always worries me 🙂

  16. Ahhhhh, man….welcome back to the fold! I’m still outside of it, but I am alive and everything.

It’s been 7 months? That’s crazy. Addy started crawling around at about 6 months, if I remember correctly. She started early, though. She’ll be walking soon, so you better get ready for that! I was going to say something about a few of the movies you watched, but Oldboy is sticking in my head. I just noticed earlier today that it’s streaming on Netflix, so I should watch that at some point soon. My only hope is that I don’t get pissed.

Yeah, 7 months, really has flown by. We have all the baby books, as Im sure you do, and they say babies crawl from about 6 months or so but our little munchkin doesn’t really fancy it. She just rolls everywhere, quicker she reckons! Loves her bouncer though so cant wait till she’s walking. Although she hasn’t got much hair either, and no teeth, so Im starting to think we got a dud. Luckily they come with a 12 month guarantee so will probably just trade her in for a smart one. I jest, she’s perfect, as all parents think their kids are right!?

I’m gonna guess you’ve seen the original Oldboy? If not, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the remake. If you don’t know the story etc it really might work for you as much as the korean version did for so many other people. Just don’t get too drunk, but more importantly thanks for stopping by. And being alive.

      • 6 months is just about the earliest babies will crawl, and most don’t do it that early. And I don’t know about your warranty. Better check with the manufacturer.

Oh, I had a few, alright! And smoked some, even. But the Oldboy remake sucks, sober or wasted. One thing my wife pointed out that really bugs me is the fact that Brolin doesn’t appear socially awkward at all after 20 years in relative isolation. I don’t buy it, especially having seen Oh Dae-Su’s character. I actually loved the first 15 minutes or so of the remake, but once it settled down, it became boring as hell. Not to mention the horrible fake fight scenes. Just take the “hammer” scene. I didn’t have any delusions of it being as good as the one in the original, but the entire thing was CG bullshittery. I also didn’t like how they changed the main character’s motivation. Some of the darkness was sucked out of it by making him want to fix everything for his daughter the whole time as opposed to wanting vengeance. That’s kind of what the whole thing is about. If I were to guess, they did that so as to not be completely dark, but IMO, the original earns its darkness the whole way.

Heaven forbid a bit of blood shows up. Fools. Anyway, I’ve missed being able to talk about why Oldboy should be dark and that kind of thing. Vengeance is the main bit, but he really didnt seem that bothered as you say.

Your wife makes a valid argument, I was too distracted about how well he aged. Plus the ending wasn’t as impactful…….and the fight scenes you mention……..so you excited for The Raid & I Saw The Devil remakes then? I’m not!

Thanks for the reply Phobos, a great read as always.

        • I’m lucky, then, since my wife and I love watching horror movie together. Suck on that. But I’m glad you’re back to enjoying all of this!

I didn’t know there’s a remake of I Saw the Devil in the works. I knew about The Raid. I give up now. There’s also a Predator reboot coming, but Shane Black is writing and directing, sooooooo that could be awesome. I’d rather he just go write another original screenplay and direct THAT, but whatever, I guess.

I honestly don’t think any movie is sacred anymore. Rumors fly around about who should play the new Indiana Jones; John Carpenter’s filmography is a “limit one movie per year” grab bag for assholes to desecrate…I could go on. I would not be surprised to see a remake of Jaws in the foreseeable future. Citizen Kane, anyone? How about The Godfather? Blasphemy? That’s not a crime in most countries. In these cases, maybe it should be.

        • To be fair, my wife has watched quite a few horrors. So much so that she thought I Saw The Devil was quite tame. Crazy broad.

I actually liked Predators, so I’m keen to see how the remake/sequel fits into it all. Just get Arnie back.

Saw is something I think will be rebooted soon. Rumours are that part 8 will be next up but I can see them milking it and starting again. Truly nothing is sacred

I haven’t seen much horror lately so all those you reviewed, not really , except for Would You Rather (haha) but that was like, last October? I didn’t hate it? It was super predictable and you could see how it would end a mile away. But I have a special love for Brittany Snow so what can I say, I was interested to see how she would do outside of the teen comedy scene? She was alright.

      • The masses with horror movies are full of shit. I fully believe that the horror genre is only fairly criticized by fans of it and those who bash it or go in with negative thoughts are unfit to give a proper look.

Take Ebert and his website which is now ran by others for example! He hated certain forms of horror and would bash it because of the premise alone. He completely trashed Wolf Creek for being a Slasher film.

…Anyways, just my thoughts on why Aftershock may have had it rough with typical critics. Many are influenced by Ebert or feel that horror requires the characterization of a character-based drama film to be worth a watch…

        • I think thats what makes me like the genre more. The fact that people just dismiss it. I mean horror in itself is so broad and how the hell can you even define what counts as a horror movie or not?! I love it, and never let a critic put me off a movie. Always got to make up our own minds right 🙂

    Adam.
