Lawless (2012)

movie blogathon poster

Kicking off the ‘Recommended By‘ blogathon today is my most favourite hillbilly friend Eric from The IPC. He decided to check out Lawless thanks to Zoe’s recommendation on her site The Sporadic Chronicles Of A Beginner Blogger, and here are his thoughts, in his own unique style of course!

lawless jessica chastainDear Tyson,

I never had any desire to see this thing. None. It had Shia LePoof in it and looked like it was about a bunch of hillbillies like yourself running around bootlegging moonshine, smoking corn cob pipes and talking about having sex with each other. Then one day I saw it had Jessica Chastain in it and I’m so in love with her I can’t even believe it so I thought “maybe” but then thought about LePoof and thought “No, Fuck This”.

Then I saw that a blogger I have become real good friends with put this out:

http://zuts.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/sporadic-scene-lawless-2012-just-like-you-to-believe-your-own-legend/

And I was all “hmmmmmmmmmm” and Zoe and I have the same taste in things and she really recommended it – plus she had just watched some things I had recommended to her. Then I read this:

http://zuts.wordpress.com/2012/12/18/review-lawless-2012/

And thought “Why Not??” So one day I took the day off work to lie around and watch TV in bed and this was on Netflix so I gave it a watch and – I LOVED IT! I really did.

LL2

It starts off nice and slow and Tom Hardy is a badass who doesn’t go around talking too much and LePoof never bothered me and Chastain got her clothes off and I really cared for Hardy’s character and I really liked the role of Howard and GODDAMN is Guy Pearce a good actor or what and this thing is bloody and wicked fun and HELL YES!! What a GREAT recommendation!! Thank you Zoe!

Have you ever seen it? This is how and where I figure you live – at a filling station, stilling whiskey under the cover of night and driving it into town in an old jalopy. You know – preserving the Customs and Pride of your village all while breaking the law and slowly killing people with your liquid poison.

LL3

Anyway, how’s it going At University? Isn’t that what you British bastards call “Going to College”? Also – how did you like that big Soccer tournament? We actually watched some games this time around and I was surprisingly excited during them.

Oh well, I hope you’re doing fine – missed you all of these months and congratulations on that baby you made! Good work!

Sincerest Regards and Warm Love,

Eric

  1. So much stereotyping in your review here…..next you’ll think all I do all day is drink tea and eat scones. Damn redneck fool 😉

Thank you for doing this good buddy, always great to read your work. And no I have not seen this yet. I want to, and will do. You were first to reply to the sign ups for this, so only fitting you open the ceremony.

    Love Tyson

I thought this film looked dull, but I know Hardy, Chastain and LaBeouf are all very particular about which films they do, so maybe it’s better than I thought.

And I was watching the World Cup. Watched every Germany game I could – even took off work twice for the US and Brazil games! Germany’s my favorite team. In 2006 was devastated the way they lost to Italy at the end – and then in 2010 they were screwed by the officials. This time they came in and took no prisoners. When they got that goal towards the end of the championship game was absolutely awe-inspiring.

I hate Brazil b/c I’ve always thought they were overhyped, overrated and arrogant, and I’ve always wanted to see Germany pound the crap out of them in a World Cup match; and I also hated the Miami Heat since LeBron joined, and the Spurs have been my favorite NBA team since 1991. And FLorida State won the National Championship in football; so 2014 has been a pretty great year for me in sports!! 🙂

        • Germany were the best team and deservedly won. 8 years in the making that team. England need to do the same, start from scratch.

I’ve also just watched Tom Hardy alone in a car for 90 minutes. Locke is a weird one, Hardy sure does mix up his work.

I recently watched “Locke”. I thought it was good, but was a bit different from what I had expected after reading all those tag lines about how “exhilarating” it was.

Yeah, England looked like garbage this the around; I was expecting more from them. Hopefully in 2018.

I love Germany b/c they play the game so well. Laser focused. No showboating, taunting or flopping; and they are strong in every facet of the game defense, goalkeeping and offense. They may not be the flashiest team, but they seem to be the most focused. We see where flash got Brazil. lol. My NBA team, the San Antonio Spurs, are the exact same way. 🙂 Is NBA basketball popular in your country?

        • Yeah I didn’t find it too exhilarating. Plus hardys welsh accent was weird.

Nah NBA gets no attention here really. NFL games are on really late at night but football is everything here 🙂

I know how huge soccer is over there, which is why I was shocked at how crappy England was. You had FOUR years to prepare! I know so many of you guys were bummed by the lack of effort and execution. I can only imagine the cursing and swearing coming from the pubs during the games. lol.

NBA basketball is a lot of fun. Of course depending on which teams you watch; hopefully it will catch on over there as it has in other parts of the world, like Asia. NBA is quite popular over there. European soccer is becoming bigger over here in the US as FOX has a channel dedicated to soccer (futbol) but to be honest I get the leagues and the clubs mixed up. MLS, which is America’s soccer league is dull. It’s way better than it was when it started since some Euro guys have come over, but Europe and South America is where the real talent is; some good talent in Africa, as well. After watching World Cup I can’t go back and watch an MLS match. lol.

On another note, how much of a beast is US goalkeeper Tim Howard??? I actually thought going into World Cup he may be the best goalie of all the teams and I think he proved me right. 🙂 US plays hard but their offensive execution is terrible. Our midfielder Bradley doesn’t grasp the fundamentals of simply trapping the ball and having control as you dribble. Howard’s great effort in the Belgium game was wasted b/c US couldn’t even get any shots. That’s why Howard had so many saves b/c Belgium took so many shots b/c they were the aggressor’s on offense for 3/4 of the match. That second half of the US Belgium game was phenomenal! The saves Howard kept making. Just awesome. Now, the US does have a few nice strikers, but your midfield needs to be able to control possessions to put those strikers in position. I would really be looking forward to US World Cup in 2018, but I don’t think Howard will be there and he is the MVP of the team. He got so good b/c of training and playing in Europe.

        • Trouble with England is we are the best league in the world but all the best players are not English. Hence our national team doesn’t gel.

Howard was great but he’s maybe top 5 in our league, no more. But you guys just dug in and he had one of those days where everything went right. I was surprised Donovan wasn’t picked though for you. Your mls is getting some good players, david villa and frank lampard are 2 of the best players Europe has ever had and they join New York next year.

After seeing US’s lack of execution on offense I was surprised Donovan wasn’t on the World Cup roster, as well. A lot of Americans were upset about it when it was announced, but I trusted Klinsmann knew what he was doing. Now I am thinking he was secretly pulling for Germany. lol.

I guess we turned the movie blog message board into a soccer/futbol board. lol.

  6. My Beloved SSC,

WHOOP! I am so glad that you enjoyed this one! It was a great little film that I had inordinate amounts of fun with and watched quite a few times within the same week. Pearce was a great villain, DeHaan was freaking adorable, Hardy was excellent… screw it, the whole cast was wonderful for what it did. Loved Jason Clark’s Howard… that dude was crazy!

    Love,

    JB
