The Collection (2012)

movie blogathon poster

Next up on my ‘Recommended By‘ blogathon is Anthony (or you probably better know him as atothewr) from A Zombie Movie For The Holidays. He was actually inspired (sort of) by my review of The Collection. Just as an aside….I actually like the movie much more now than I did when I reviewed it if anyone clicks the link to see my review. After the 3rd and 4th watch it really hit home in a more positive way. But this is Anthony’s time, so enough from me and here’s Anthony’s take on The Collection.

I honestly don’t know where to start a review about “The Collection.” Is it good or bad is so subjective that it really depends on who you are, and what you think is good or bad. I think this is a really good movie, because it dots all the right spaces on the horror resume, – gore, suspense, scares, unique setting, unique killer, solid score, people in peril, etc. I think that’s why in the end I gave it a solid 3 stars our 5. I honestly wanted to go higher, but I just didn’t feel like it got to that point. Sure, it was entertaining – my goodness that first 10 to 20 minutes, seriously messed up, but I don’t think it quite got up to a 3 and a half or four star movie level. Still something missing in my mind at least, but if you like movies like this – which I sometimes do – then you can’t go wrong watching it. “The Collection” is streaming on Netflix Instant Watch right now. So, no reason not to see it if you have that service. You can always turn it off if you don’t like it, but promise me you will make it through the first thirty minutes. If you are a gore hound, it is well worth the wait.

As a sidebar:

One thing a movie like “The Collection” has to have is a great killer, and believe me they have found one here. The mask, the clothes, the way he does what he does really tells me they may have found a killer they can keep on going with for many movies beyond this one. This might be the start of a brand new franchise.

Rumor has it that there is a third one floating around yet to be made called “The Collected.” Not sure if it will get made or not. I also don’t have a review from the first one in the series called “The Collector,” but I do remember digging that one as well. I think I gave that one at least 3 stars out of 5, might have been 3.5, the memory gets fuzzy the older I get. I owned it for a bit, so that should tell you how much I enjoyed it.

So. Have you seen this movie or the first one? What did you think about either one of them?

I think these movies have been fun so far. They have some really messed up scenes going on. I liked how the end of The Collection sets you up for the next one so I hope it’s actually happening at some point.

  7. Honestly, the idea creeps me out, not to mention the scary cover. I don’t mind horror movies, and there are some I really like (The Ring), but I’m not usually one for gore, unless it’s like Django Unchained gore. Nice review, though. Perhaps I’ll have to give it a try around Halloween just because!

  8. Nope, not seen these yet but I love a horror movie as much as the next guy so that list has grown that little bit longer!

  9. I liked The Collection, but felt the same way, it didn’t quite make it to a really high score with me either. It was entertaining, for sure, and worth a watch, but not a classic.
