Movie Reviews – Afflicted; Backcountry; Grizzly; Killers; Time Lapse; Under The Skin

Some of you may realise I haven’t posted anything here in a while. To cut a long story short, I’m hoping to revive this site and keep it ticking over with new reviews. I say reviews, they’re more like brief thoughts on movies you may or may not have heard about, or at the very least they might offer you a little something different to the usual Hollywood blockbusters. They won’t always be good films that I showcase here, but hopefully there’ll be something to tempt you. I’d love to chat about any of these movies if you’ve seen them, or if I’ve at all piqued your interest, or even if you just want to know where the hell I’ve been for six months, please just sound off in the comments section below.

Afflicted (2013)

afflicted movie poster

Two best friends see their trip of a lifetime take a dark turn when one of them is struck by a mysterious affliction. Now, in a foreign land, they race to uncover the source before it consumes him completely.

Written/Directed by & starring Derek Lee and Clif Prowse who play themselves, Afflicted is easily one of the best horror movies I’ve seen. It’s supposed to be low-budget, using hand-held cameras as the actors film themselves throughout, and this would normally equal a terrible end product. But wow, not only does the shaky-cam technique not irritate at all, it actually makes sense for a change why they would be filming. The fact that it looks so good helps too. I can’t go into the story too much as it would spoil the surprise, but I can say that we see these guys go on one hell of a messed up journey, and I just wish I could see this film for the first time again. It’s dark, bloody, scary, full of tension and shines a whole new light of a certain type of genre. If this is just their debut piece, I can’t wait to see what they cook up next. Honestly folks, I simply cannot recommend Afflicted highly enough.

Backcountry (2014)

backcountry movie poster

An urban couple go camping in the woods and find themselves lost in the territory of a predatory black bear.

The first of todays bear-themed movie reviews focuses on a young couple Alex (Jeff Roop) & Jenn (Missy Peregrym) who go camping in the Canadian wilderness. Aside from a brief encounter with Brad (Eric Balfour), this film mainly follows the couple as they end up fighting for their lives against a relentless black bear.

Director Adam MacDonald shares that his inspiration for the film came from some of the bear attacks he had read about, and that inspired him to make a kind of ‘Open Water in the woods’ movie. I’d say he has accomplished this. Backcountry is great, I really bought the relationship between our two leads, and I’ve been a big fan of Missy Peregrym since watching her in Reaper a few years ago. It all looked so beautiful and well shot, and of course the most important part of a movie like this is what the bears and bear attacks look like. Backcountry nails that, it all blends together so well. It’s not gory as such, although it has a couple of brutal moments. The effects team did fantastic work here. If you like your movies tense and thrilling you have to give this a shot. Certainly a better bear movie than the one below…….

Grizzly aka Red Machine (2014)

grizzly aka red machine

Two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home in the Alaskan wild. They set out on a two-day hike and are stalked by an unrelenting grizzly bear.

I’ve been excitedly checking the progress and looking forward to seeing Grizzly for a long time. Directed by David Hackl who worked on the SAW movies, and with an impressive cast list; James Marsden, Thomas Jane, Piper Perabo, Billy Bob Thornton…… it seemed like this was going to be great fun. Sadly all the delays and lack of proper release normally mean bad things, and I have to admit this film is overshadowed in every department by Backcountry. I was really disappointed, there were a few good parts but little things kept bugging me with this. Why did Piper Perabo’s character need to be deaf? Not that it’s a problem of course, except she was a nature lover so would go out into the woods on her own….. which obviously sets up the danger element. Just felt out of place, the threat would of been relevant whether she was deaf or not. Its a massive bear. Why not cast a deaf actor? I’m rambling. Then we had characters who would turn up then never be seen again when they seemed quite important to the progression of the story. Why was everyone such a poor shot? And the end just seemed like they’d run out of ideas. Sorry to say that this didn’t do a lot for me.

Killers (2014)

killers movie poster

A psychopathic Japanese executive accidentally triggers a journalist’s ‘dark side’. They begin to connect over the Internet and make a complicated bond.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto & Kimo Stamboel (or The Mo Brothers – whose work you may have seen in The ABCs of Death or V/H/S 2) and starring Kazuki Kitamura (Kill Bill, The Raid 2) & Oka Antara (The Raid 2), Killers is right up my street. I’ve been dying to see this, and as soon as the blu ray arrived I told my little girl to just leave me alone and go watch Frozen again for 2 and a bit hours so I could get this watched. Let’s just say I was very happy as it turned out even better than I’d hoped.

Here we have a serial killer who loves what he does and then films it to share with the world, and we have another guy who is very much an accidental killer who finds he enjoys it more than he should. Naturally their worlds collide and we wait for their inevitable meeting.

If you love movies like I Saw The Devil, Oldboy, The Raid (which to be honest everyone should, they are incredible movies!) then you’ll have no complaints with Killers. If I was to be critical it’s not quite as good as those films I mention, but it’s so close. A definite 8/10 easy, pushing a 9. Needless to say it’s bloody and not for the squeamish, but what else would you expect with a name like Killers? Something starring Katherine Heigl & Ashton Kutcher? Come on now, that’ll never happen…….right?

Gareth Evans, who found fame with his Raid films produces this, and maybe it’s thanks to him (his name is all over the posters & artwork) this is even out in the UK. I hope they all continue to work together and I look forward to what they all concoct next.

Time Lapse (2014)

time lapse poster

Three friends discover a mysterious machine that takes pictures 24hrs into the future and conspire to use it for personal gain, until disturbing and dangerous images begin to develop.

Sci-Fi, time travel, whatever this movie would be classed as normally isn’t my kind of watch. There’s no horror as such, no real nudity or gore, but there was enough tension just about to keep me entertained until the end. Which, credit where its due, was a clever ending. Any one watching this will probably try to think what they would do with this device, and I’m sure we would all recognise the traits that the characters on show here do. Greed, love, lust, hope……..if you found a device that predicted the future how would you react? I think the three leads here were believable and at least two of them were likeable, although I didn’t really buy the threat that entered their lives a little later on. The most unconvincing gangster I’ve seen would be putting it mildly.

Apparently this comes out in the US next month, but I saw this on UK TV last year and I look forward to seeing what people think of it now more will actually see it. Personally I thought it was a decent film, nothing spectacular but some clever touches in there. I wasn’t aware of any of the cast beforehand, but at least Danielle Panabaker was good to look at so that’s always a plus.

Under The Skin (2013)

under the skin movie poster

A mysterious woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. Events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.

All I’d ever really heard about this was that it was fantastic, Scarlett Johansson gets naked and skins humans. I figured it sounded like it was worth a watch, but I have to be honest it didn’t quite resonate with me like it seems to have with others. I’ve never really seen Johansson in anything that I came away thinking how amazing she was, plus I don’t really find her attractive to look at (sorry Scarlett if you’re reading this) and again here I just felt nothing towards her. I wasn’t engrossed in her journey, and it just felt so repetitive and ultimately un-rewarding. Plus it’s all filmed in Scotland so it was tricky to know what the hell people were saying, since a lot of it was supposedly filmed with hidden cameras in order to get real reactions. I’d rather just watch Impractical Jokers.

Director Jonathan Glazer likes to take his time choosing his projects it seems, but back in 2000 he gave the world one of my all time favourites Sexy Beast. Sadly for me Under The Skin doesn’t even come close to being as good. It’s slow, nothing really seems to happen, and nothing is explained or fleshed out. To some people that’s probably my fault for not reading enough into it. I would say its a little shallow and pretentious. I’ve had more fun reading other people’s reviews and theories than I did watching the film. Maybe a little above my head this one. The scene on the beach was heartbreaking though I have to admit.

  1. Hell yes I’d like to know where you’ve been! Glad to see you back! Funny that you chose one if the most plain looking pictures of ScarJo. Loved Afflicted, great film. I think most of the trailers give away the premise, but really well done.

    • Haha, hey Bubba! I figured you might. I lost everything man, emails, site passwords, twitter etc all got taken. It sucks, and it meant I lost everything and all contact to people. I was gutted, annoyed, ashamed as it meant apologising to you kind folks helping me on the new venture. Then my banking got hacked and I lost money, just a really shitty time. So I took time off everything internet-y and until now I’m back on this old blog. With zero email contacts and zero followers, hence trying to find people again and re-connect. Slowly but surely I’ll get there again.

Glad to see you still doing your thing, hopefully Ill get more time now to check your stuff regularly.

I picked that photo of her on purpose, although I dont think shes attractive in any form 🙂

Glad you have seen and loved Afflicted. It was the trailer that got my attention but as a rule I hate trailers, hence why I didnt include them. Spoil so much. Best not knowing what the threat is, genre etc. Just going in blind is the best and most rewarding way.

  2. Hey Tyson! Nice to see you back. I was reading the comment up there. That really sucks! Always look forward to what you have to say about movies.

As for the movies, Under the Skin and Backcountry are two I’ve been wanting to see. The former is on Netflix, I just haven’t been in the mood for it yet.

While Time Lapse, i saw last year when it premiered at the Fantasia Festival here in Montreal I was possibly the best movie among all the movies I saw in that festival. It was pretty intense and I loved it (probably more than you did). Haha! But then, as I always say, my standards for movies are relatively lower than all you horror connoisseurs.

Hope you like Under The Skin more than I did. It’s a weird one, lots of love for it out there. I did like Time Lapse, just wasn’t blown away with it. I think the annoying friend and the terrible enforcer took me out of the moment, but as I mentioned above the ending was well done. I need to get to a festival, so jealous! 🙂

      • I loved going to the Fantasia Festival, even TIFF, the one year that I went but its really tiring. It was like an extra long day after work and then heading home at like midnight…but maybe its just crazy hours that the movies I wanted to see was. But it was worth it 🙂 Talking about the festival, I really want to see what you will say about Unfriended (was called Cybernatural when I saw it at the Festival).

Unfriended – is that the one that’s just hit cinemas in the U.S.? Be a while till we get it probably. Did you like it?

        • I did like it quite a bit. Not quite as much as Time Lapse but the concept and the premise was well done. There was a few little details that annoyed at first but its pretty well done for a found footage sort of horror but through webcam 🙂

          Liked by 1 person

        • I wasn’t sure how much a film would work all being through webcam, but Ive just seen an episode of Modern Family all done through Facetime that worked well, so maybe a film will too! Its actually out here May 1st so I might try see it. Otherwise it’ll be on blu ray not long after no doubt.

        • Either way, I look forward to what you have to say about it. You might not like it..I mean, I feel like I have pretty low standards for horror in general. haha! It comes from not having seen enough of it. I just hope you don’t hate it because then I’d feel bad….

        • It’s funny, looking at this on imdb made me realise a few months ago a friend of mine who hates horror saw a trailer for this film on twitter and asked if we’d go see it. So if he’s still up for it I might see it very soon. The name didn’t click until now!

Even if I hate it you shouldn’t feel bad, there’s probably loads of films Ive recommended to folks that they hated. All part of the fun!

When you disappear like that, without a trace, and make no contact for so long, etc. then losing your followers and passwords, etc. is great news! 🙂

It could have been something much worse (maybe i watch too many horror and drama films), so am glad you’re alive and well, and your family and Ava are, as well. Which reminds me, we need to see an updated pic of Ava when you get a chance. 🙂

*Don’t worry about the subscriptions & followers; you will get them back. Just glad to know everything else is good. (by the way this is Gary Lee, in case you weren’t sure; had to change my online handle.)

You need to have a piece of paper tucked away in a safe place with passwords, email addresses and phone numbers, etc. *Also, learn to create passwords in the form of a sentence that are unique and easy for you to remember; like “I like to watch movies all night”. It could be EYEl2wM35. 3 for letters in all and 5 for letters in night. Etc.

I didn’t create another blog. I decided to develop a YouTube channel instead. Still working on that.

I’ve got to see Backcountry – Ryan over at Rhino’s Horror also recommended it. And now I want to see Killers, as well. Sounds intriguing.

I agree w/ you about Scarlett Johannson. I mean, I think she looks attractive at times, but honestly I think Piper & Missy (from your pics) blow her away! I like Jessica Alba and Olga Kurylenko.

I also agree with you about Under The Skin. I didn’t think it was great, either, but I appreciated that it dared to be unique. Oddly enough, Mark Hobin, who runs Fast Reviews Blog, and is very opinionated and detailed in his assessment of films, ranked Under The Skin #1 in his top 10 films of 2014. I couldn’t believe it. And actually, I don’t think he could, either. He said the film just got “under his skin” and he could not get it out of his head; he was just captivated by it.

I was, too; when I woke up from the nap in the second act! lol.

Just never found her attractive, in the same way she might not think I am. To each their own. Might have to review a Jessica Alba film next time so I can use a photo of her 🙂

Unique is definitely the right word for Under The Skin. I’ll have to check out Mark’s thoughts. I know Mark Walker loved it as Ive spoke with him about it. Top 10 is high praise, but then again No One Lives would probably have been in mine and you weren’t too keen if I remember rightly!

I liked “No One Lives” okay. I just thought it was a bit over-the-top which is to be expected from a WWE film. I didn’t think it was bad, though. I thought Luke Evans was good.

My top film of 2014 was “Starry Eyes”. That’s probably my top film since “The Hidden Face”.

    Dear TyTy,

I saw this post last night, so I’m still following proper, but last night we were preparing for tornadoes so things weren’t wicked for getting on the laptop. Then, today I was busy as fuck at work.

Great post, Chief! Out of all of these I’ve seen Under the Skin and I think it’s a good movie but I didn’t get most of it. Backcountry is out here but I have been hesitant about it. Preservation really rubbed me the wrong way.

I hope the wife is still kissing that picture of me on her dresser before bed and I hope you’re still rolling in the Pounds Sterling I helped bring to your blog a while back. What’s disappointing is “Preservation” had the potential to be really good; it had a good setting and creepy villains – until they reveal too soon who the villains are. Then mix in the stupid characters and it turns the movie into a comedy. Such a waste! I wouldn’t put “Preservation” on my shitfest list; that would go to “The Secret Village”. LOL. Which would make a fun shitfest social. It’s about time for another one soon I think. 🙂

I was going to watch that and “Birman” before compiling my top 10 list of 2014. I managed to get through “Birdman” somehow but just don’t think I can do “Boyhood” and will have to compile my list w/out it. I need to post that list.

It’s also funny, I got back a little while ago from seeing a new (and in my estimation rather lame) found-footage horror called ‘Unfriended.’ It’s all about the tricky business of having an online presence in this day and age. It had some interesting sequences but it’s ultimate denouement had me a little pissed to say the least. 😉

What you went through sounds just as scary honestly. That really sucks that had happened but glad to hear you’re slowly but surely bouncing back. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for new posts!

    • Thanks Tom 🙂

It’s funny, Kim just recommended this film a little higher up!

It was a crappy experience tech wise but it’s nice to be back. Hopefully the break recharged me. I certainly got time to watch a lot of films so I have plenty to write about.

Tyson, you get a new Twitter yet? If not hurry up and get on it. 🙂

“Preservation” is a low budget indie horror on netflix; the husband may possibly be THE dumbest horror character I’ve ever seen and that’s saying a LOT! The premise is actually good and the antagonist is strong, but gets ruined halfway through. It could have been much better. You just need to check it out for yourself and see what you think; at the very least it will be humorous for you.

I watched “Afflicted” a while ago and I thought it was good, but I wasn’t blown away since I felt like I had recently seen a couple other films with similar premises. I felt it was a lot like “Contracted”. I can’t remember if you saw that, but that’s one I disagree w/ Ryan & Isaacs, as they both hated it, mostly b/c of one scene. But me, I loved “Contracted”. I saw it BEFORE “Afflicted” so that’s probably why I liked it better.

    • Nah, not sure I’m gonna bother with Twitter/Facebook again. Had about 4000 followers and cant be bothered restarting that. Hard enough getting people to re-check my blog out here 🙂

I’ll look out for Preservation, never even heard of it but I see it has the guy from Orange is the new black in. I love that show.

I’ll be sure to hunt down Contracted too, dont think Ive heard of it and will see how that plays out. If its anything like Afflicted that can only be a good thing,

But if you have a twitter, you can link the new blog site to it and we can retweet your reviews so that your old followers will know you’re back; plus, since I don’t have a blog of my own, I don’t usually go to blogs anymore – I just click on the reviews when they’re posted on twitter. Twitter will help build your blog and will put you back in touch with most of your subscriber base.

I just watched Backcountry and I really liked it. Kind of petered out towards the end but it was much better than I thought it would be : ) Good call, Chief.

  17. Welcome back, Tyson! We already spoke via e-mail…I’m glad you found me again, and I’m proud to be one of the five followers! But it pisses me off that you go away for six freaking months, and your first day back, you have 80+ comments on your site…more than what I have on my ENTIRE site! And of the movies reviewed above, I’d say I’m most interested in ‘Afflicted’. And I love the poster for ‘Inglorious Basterds’…oh wait, it’s ‘Red Machine’. Never mind.

    • Lol: thanks Todd. Although I picked a shitty time to come back as I’ve moved house so without Internet 🙂

I’ll catch up with you soon. And yeah that poster is a huge copyright issue I’m sure. Sure there was an Anthony Hopkins horror movie with one similar…….some possession thing……

  18. Killers looks really awesome especially since you compared it to Oldboy and I saw The Devil. I can totally understand why you didn’t like Under The Skin, and I would have felt the same way if I didn’t see it in theaters. That opening shot was among the best openings I have ever seen. BTW I nominated you for a Versatile Blogger Award https://videovortex.wordpress.com/2015/05/18/the-vern-honors-some-great-online-critics/

  19. I think I had a weird squashed version of Under The Skin so it made Scarlett even less attractive, but also kind of funny.

    • Sorry for the super late reply. 😦

I can’t imagine her looking even less attractive. I’m annoyed I forked out for the blu ray of this. What a waste.

  20. That last girl is gorgeous. I’ve seen her in quite a few TV shows. Shark and Arrow among them. Great to see you back on here 🙂
