Desert Island Films #83 – Let There Be Movies

Desert Island Films is about choosing 8 films you would take if you were going to be stranded on a desert island and explaining your choices. They don’t necessarily have to be your favourites, just 8 films, no more or no less! You are also permitted to take one book and one novelty item which must be inanimate and of no use in escaping the island or allowing communication from outside.

Desert Island Films #83 – Let There Be Movies

If I were stuck on a desert island, there are two things I think would be absolute necessities in my entertainment: laughter and hope. I’ll need something to laugh at besides the eventual voices in my head that will likely show up. And I’ll need something to give me hope of getting off this island! With that in mind, here are the movies I’d take with me.

1) “Tommy Boy”

This isn’t going to make many people’s top ten comedies, but I laughed as hard at this movie as I have any film, with just a couple exceptions. Some flat out classic comedic moments with Chris Farley and David Spade playing off each other. If only Farley hadn’t died so young. Could you imagine the potential comedy duos with him and some of today’s big-screen comedians? What a shame. This was probably is best film and is a total riot.

2) “The Matrix”

This is my all-time favorite movie and would satisfy my “hope” requirement. Even with as many times as I’ve watched it, there is still a lot to digest and contemplate. Though I may eventually just re-watch the subway and dojo fight scenes over and over, it is certainly worth having there with me. There is no spoon…

3) “A Christmas Story”

It will undoubtedly be hot on this island. Indiana winters can sometimes be brutal, but they always provide some great memories of snowball fights, sledding, family get-togethers, impromptu football games breaking out in the “tundra”… memories I would love to recall while baking in the sun and this movie will help to do just that. It’s also pretty humorous at parts. “I can’t move my arms!”

4) “Inception”

Not necessarily a hope-filled movie, but I can find tidbits to hold onto. Really smart film, very imaginitive and thought-provoking, sure to keep me intrigued through multiple views on an island. And, if I have dreams about this movie, I can develop a nice little paranoia in wondering if I’m not really on this island and someone is just messing with me.

5) “Anchorman”

After reading a lot of these desert island film submissions, this pick almost seems cliche’. But hey, it’s hilarious! I’m a big Will Ferrell fan and this is easily his best comedy. Very quotable, superb supporting cast, I could laugh for days. Seeing the sequel would alone be enough motivation to try and get off this island. “I’m in a glass case of emotion!!!” LOL.

6) “Saints and Soldiers”

As you can tell from my list already I’m not much of an independent, little-known film kind of guy. Saints and Soldiers is one of my exceptions to that. This is certainly not the best war movie I’ve ever seen, but I liked the story-line and the inherent tension built into the protagonist and antagonist of the film. Pretty good look at how one soldiers faith, and another soldiers lack of faith play into their decision making during war time.

7) “The Goonies”

Sloth Loves Chunk! This movie is just flat out a lot of fun. I was about 9 or 10 when I first caught this on TV and it really captured me. What kid doesn’t dream of such an adventure! The cast is a who’s who of 80’s child stars, it really embodies the “coming of age” type of movies that flooded that decade, the soundtrack is super cool, and there are immense amounts of swashbuckling! “Goonies never say die!”

8) “The Shawshank Redemption”

“I must admit I didn’t think much of this island first time I laid eyes on it. Looked like a stiff breeze would blow it over. That was my first impression of the place….” What better movie to inspire hope of an escape back to civilization than this one?

Book – The Bible

If you’ve ever visited our blog, Let There Be Movies, this should come as no surprise to you. We review movies from a Christian Perspective, so naturally having the word of God by my side is a must. Plus, when it comes to a story of hope, there is none greater! Thanks be to God for such a great offer of salvation as His Son Jesus! But c’mon, get me off this island!

Luxury Item – A La-Z-Boy reclining sofa with fold-down table and cupholders

Why have JUST a bed? I don’t watch my movies lying flat. With a reclining sofa I can sit up straight, at full attention. Or I could recline back and relax, ready for the belly-laughs. The fold down table is a nice feature to keep whatever food I may find right next to me. The cupholders, well… I’ve never had cupholders in my sofa and I want them, okay!
